I’ve read a lot of reviews on valve oil here. I thought, I just changed brands, why not share why.

The one thing I’ve learned over the years is that they all work about the same.

I’ve found that a petroleum based oil works well but, leaves residue over time.

My Monette came with Ultra Pure. It works well and lasts a long time but, I was getting white slime stuff in the trumpet in a short time. I stayed with it for years. I tried all different kinds of slide grease and still the white stuff so, I blame the oil.

Recently I bought a new trumpet and it came Yamaha oil. It doesn’t last a long time but, guess what, no white slime.
I have to oil the valves every time I play, even if twice a day but, the trumpet stays clean.

Hetman's here too. No white residue. Yamaha oil has a good reputation too. When I was only playing a Yamaha, I used it without any problems.
I use whatever comes with a horn until it is gone and then clean and switch as a rule.

My experience is that slime and goo can be from the grease used on slides. It especially happened when I used a lanolin-based slide grease.

Thin (low viscosity) valve oils can work as a solvent for grease and assist in migration of the grease.

Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

My 2 cents - I use Hetman #1 in my 61 Mendez. One day I noticed I could make a valve stick by pushing off center. I added Ultra Pure Black Label. I still use the Hetman #1 but seems as long as I have some Black Label in the mix, an off center push does not cause a stick.

Monster for me, works fine, and no slime or other bad behaviors. I started with Monster as it was the only brand that had valve oil, slide oil, and grease in stock at the same time -- I like to stay in the same ecosystem. Every time I look for Hetman's no retailer has those three products in stock simultaneously, and ordering just a bottle of say #5 seems wasteful by the time shipping is figured in.
