I'm looking for a lip slur book to use with my private students. Any suggestions out there?

For my middle school students I've created some Schlossberg-like sheets of slurs that I print out for them, and for older students I have them buy Schlossberg.

I'd really like to find one book that can last a 7th or 8th grade student through most of high school, giving them a nice variety of material to work with. I'm tired of using Schlossberg to be honest, and for the cost ($20), it's a little more than I want make students spend for what they're getting. Yes, Schlossberg is great and I play those studies every day, but for most of my younger students' needs it's not quite right.

And I'd much prefer an actual book, as opposed to e-books, pdfs, etc. I hate having kids bring in crumpled sheets of paper... they need real books.

Thanks for your recommendations friends!

Bai Lin is a great book, but it's way too advanced for middle school / high school aged players with few exceptions.

An excellent book for starting students on Flexibility type exercises is "Fundamental Flexibilities" by Matthew Graves. Available here:

https://www.purtle.com/matt-graves-fundamental-flexibility-studies

More advanced players should be started with either "Twenty-Seven Groups of Exercises" by Earl D. Irons, or perhaps "Lip Flexibilities" by Charles Colin. Another good medium level book is Lip Flexibility On The Trumpet" by Walter Smith.

The more advanced books include Schlossberg and the aforementioned Bai Lin book.

Best wishes,

Another "beginner" level lip slurs book that I have from back in Jr. High is "Embouchure Builder" by Lowell Little. It has the advantage of still being cheap to purchase today. It's $6.99 at sheet music plus, just checked.

Of course, most any lip slur book (or even Arban's) will do, provided you work on the ones appropriate for the playing level at the time, instead of beating your face in working on the harder ones at the back of the book before you are ready for them.

I like Bai Lin lots but agree that much of it might be too advanced.

I seem to recall really enjoying the Vizzutti books and thinking that many of the flexibility exercises were reasonably accessible and entertaining.

Thank you for suggesting the Matt Graves book, John. Do you know if it's available in a print edition? I'm only seeing a download version so far.

You can also have a look at 'how trumpet players do it' by John Ridgeon.

Starts very easy and processes incrementally, plus some not too outrageous commentary at the start. The images may not be to everyone's taste...

Cheers

Andy

James Ackley's "A Systematic Approach to Flexibility" is terrific, with plenty of exercises within the range of a middle schooler. Scott Belck's "Modern Flexibilities" offers more challenging flexibility patterns, but most of them are only written up to G, so it might also be worth considering.

I put together a comprehensive routine for my private students that includes flexibility exercises that are progressive in nature.

Easily used for middle age groups to advanced.

I can send it to you if you wish.

I second Belk. I like them because they are fun and musically interesting.

Collins is also to be recommended.

I agree with RandyTX about the book Embouchure Builder by Lowell Little, especially for junior high students, the Earl Irons 27 groups is a great book for high school players.

One other thing, as RandyTX indicated the current price of the book Embouchure
Builder is $6.99. When I purchased my first copy(which I still have, BTW)
in the fall of 1969 the price of the book was $0.75, yep, seventy five cents.
...Oh Well...LOL

Vizzutti offers some accessible and entertaining flexibility work in his books.

Good book. Jeff Purtle used to sell it from his site. Anyone interested in it could try contacting him or Matt Graves directly.

To me, Embouchure Builder by Lowell Little is a good prelude to Irons. I would definitely start with it.
