I've tried and failed several times to sell my 738, I'm glad that I still have it.

It gets rotated in and out with a 37-style Edwards and a 72 MLV, but every time I come back to the 738 I'm reminded of just how unique it is and how much fun it is to really fill up a room with sound even at soft dynamics, or just bury everyone on a shout chorus. The 5 inch bell has a flare that eats mutes, but can give off such a dark smokey vibe. The slots are huge and I definitely miss more notes on this horn than the others, but it's so light and nimble that I can blow through different types of licks than I can on it's brothers. I used to hate it for those same reasons as a college music major, that's why I switched to the Edwards, turns out I still missed my fair share of notes on the expensive custom horn.

My horn benefited greatly from a Melk alignment, and only seems to get along with heavy mouthpieces, usually a Monette B4 but recently a Hammond 3mb in a heavy blank. It was also gold plated by a previous owner to pretty much the same shade of gold as the Monette, so I really dig the look of that combination as well.

Anyway, I'm done trying to sell it. If you have the opportunity I highly recommend at least giving one a test drive before they all disappear.

Yep, love my 634 and 732 (which, if you ask my wife, is for sale....just don't tell anyone else, right? )

The whole series is very under-rated.

Had been playing my Kanstul 1001 for a few months, and on a whim took out the 634 for some Christmas shows (Messiah), and just loved the sound and blow....the Kanstul has not yet made it back into my main case....

Hopefully they'll both outlast me!

Cheers,
Roger

I have a nice 632 headed my way this week. Can't wait to get ahold of it... been wanting one for a while. I've been on a 6310z for a while now so I'm curious to see how they compare.

Hey trumpetguy, it would be great if you wrote of your comparison experience once you've had the 632 for a while - I haven't had enough time on a 6310z or 8310z to say anything meaningful about them vs. the 732

Cheers,
Roger

I will do that! And if you ever decide to part with the 634 I'd be interested.

'fraid not - was my first ever trumpet - if the wife eventually puts the foot down, that would be the one I'd keep, for all sorts of reasons...

Cheers,
Roger

I've got a "time capsule" 738 that looks like it came right off the assembly line! At first I thought it played pretty good until I stumbled upon a heavy weight backbore and then the horn came alive! It is as you say in that they like a heavier piece. I think that it would also be amazing with some heavy bottom caps as well.

I had an old 6335 come into the shop with a cracked bell ring. I remembered having a junk Yamaha 737 in the closet, so I got it out, took the bell off and stripped the silver. Then I put it on the 6335 with good results; horn plays great. It felt good to rescue that old bell from the recycle heap. Since it had no ID on it, I stamped 737 on the bell where it goes into the ferrule for future ID - you never know.
