ITG 2015, Columbus Ohio...I'm staying at the 'overflow' hotel (main hotel was booked), it is about a 10 minute bus ride to the main conference hotel. Lovely place with lovely staff. I got up one morning, went down to breakfast...and I notice someone sitting quietly having eggs..Holy Double C's batman!!! It's Doc Severinson!!!You have to remember, Iv'e come from Australia...Doc is like a mysterious god like figure I have only read about, seen in pictures, listened to on recordings and watched on youtube. I left him to eat his eggs..then the next day...
I'm waiting in the bus that takes us from my hotel to the conference centre.. Door opens Doc comes in...sits next to me.. I'm not sure what to say, eventually I think it's rude to just sit there so I introduce myself. He is incredibly polite, asks some questions about Australia. I ask "Doc, did you ever make it out to Australia?'..Doc: "No, it's hard to get away when you have a regular job as a musician' . Yes , that's right you were the musical director of the Johny Carson show!!!! He also asked ' you came all this way for this conference?' I said "I came all this way to sit next you on this bus!' .. You can't buy these memories!!!!Please post your only at itg stories!! Bring on 2016!!! _________________ http://giannimarinucci.wixsite.com/giannimarinucci

That's a great story. Thanx for sharing.
I'm going to be good now and not start sharing any "whoops the sun's up" ITG stories. _________________ Pat Shaner

I had a similar experience at the ITG conference in New Jersey (at Rowan University) a number of years ago... I was sitting in the audience for one of the many performances, chatting with my roommate (to my right), when he said, "look who's sitting next to you". I look to my left and there sits Doc! To HIS left was Jens Lindemann (with the Canadian Brass at the time). I chatted a little with Doc and later on ran into him in the hall and he showed me the trumpet he was "hawking" (probably too strong a word). He was delightful and just a great person to talk to. I'll remember that for the rest of my life!

Who could forget the simultaneous trumpet, knitting, and zombie conferences of 2016? Definitely interesting company at meal times. _________________ Matthew Anklan

I was at ITG this year when I walked into the Shires room and saw him helping kids pick out trumpets. That was pretty darn neat. I also saw Charlie Schlueter in one of the classes. Nobody but me seemed to even recognize him. |
