I recently agreed to take over the leadership of a dixieland group. To get some inspiration and education, I went to Youtube. I found a group called Tuba-Skinny. The whole group is good but the young lady cornetist Shaye Cohn is so much fun to listen to. She has a smooth tone aad plays with such an easy swing in all tempos. Anyone else heard about her? I can't figure out the horn she use but what a sweet sound.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of this group with your post! They were new to me. Fun stuff!

Her cornet looks suspiciously like my old Yamaha student cornet (YCR-2310 or YCR-231 for the old model). Very suspiciously...

Sweet sound!

Tuba Skinny is very well known and loved in New Orleans. They've been around a while.

Shaye has bona fide jazz roots. Her grandfather, Al, was a sax player for Woody Herman. Her Dad, Joe, is a guitarist. She, I believe, trained as a classical pianist and came to the cornet later.

Anybody who hasn't heard them, there are tons of vids over on YouTube. I heartily encourage you to check them out. My personal favorite is an old Mississippi Sheiks tune, Fingering With Your Fingers.

One of the best cornets around especially for that purpose.

She's great! Tuba Skinny tours a lot - if they're in your area, you should definitely check them out.

Just another mention of what I read in an ITG interview with Warren Vache: He uses the Yamaha student model cornet.

Great link detailing Shaye's work, Croquethead. Thanks.

I came across her playing in the last couple of years via YT and was also impressed, but had forgotten the group. thanks for the reminder. They are great.

Uberopa, thanks a lot for posting this. What great timing. I had never heard of Tuba Skinny before but I am glad that I have now. Great stuff. It turns out that they will be performing in my neck of the woods this weekend. I'll be there - and I'm bringing friends - and money for the tip jar.

I saw Tuba Skinny perform in Atlanta last night. Brought my wife and teenage son. Everyone agreed it was great fun. Shaye played very well, as did the others in the group.

I saw Shaye Cohn and Tuba Skinny last Saturday night. Shaye sounds fantastic. She has a wonderful core sound, but it is her phrasing that really impressed me. She really understands her music and plays wonderful solos as well as clever harmonic riffs. I could listen to her all night. Actually, all of the Tuba Skinny musicians were great but of course I have a special affinity for the cornet. I really liked how the tuba player changed the tone of his instrument to complement the music. The trombone player was great as was the clarinet player. Erica's vocals were perfect. Just great musicians all around.

ANY love? ARE YOU KIDDING?

With me there's ALL THE LOVE for the playing of Shaye Cohn -in every aspect of her playing- and also for the rest of the band (meaning Tuba Skinny). They bond very well, the cornet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet and washboard players are exceptional.

The link posted earlier on wasn't working for me, so I place a knew one here:

https://playing-traditional-jazz.blogspot.nl/search?q=shaye+cohn

The performances on Youtube I love the most:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_yIfT5pXpA&list=PLcO9W9b4E-LN4SP3sD9Cbqg97lCV-re6i&index=12

In the above link link you can hear the talent of Erika Lewis very well (even though not clear all the time)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jr7puCkoKCQ&index=11&list=PLcO9W9b4E-LN4SP3sD9Cbqg97lCV-re6i

and:

If they don't come to my country fast enough, I'll buy a ticket to the USA to see them.

If I ever play HALF like Shaye Cohn, I've made it

Yeah, I really like her playing and even more the low-key way she leads the band.

Tuba Skinny is one of the best examples I can think of of superbly talented musicians taking advantage of the Internet to build a global audience.

Can you imagine a band like TS going to a record company and telling the suits "We know there's an audience for this stuff?"

My fave is their cover of the Mississippi Sheiks' Fingering With Your Fingers.

This is all so true. We saw them twice in April in NOLA in the same week. Erika had just had her baby and that was the end of her with the band. Part of what makes a great band leader is the ability to adapt to personnel changes. No female singer? Click, adjust and keep going. Supposedly Erika is there on tour. Does anyone know that for sure?

Oh, an I love that song too.

I believe Al Cohn's granddaughter. Plays good piano, too.
