The recording was done in 1979,
which leads me to believe it was a co-principal position Tommy Stevens and Robert Di Vall,
I have not seen the CD booklet, does anyone know who played the posthorn solo? |

Bob Di Vall plays the posthorn solo, and Tommy Stevens plays 1st in the orchestra. Also Ralph Sauer on 1st Trombone. On of the great Mahler recordings of all time!
My copy gives 1978 as the recording date.
They also made a wonderful Mahler 5 recording with Mehta in the mid-70s.

I don't know if Stevens plays first the whole time on this recording...I forgot, but he certainly plays first for the third movement.
I do know that Divall played the post horn solo on a small bore rotary flugle horn. Pretty special sound if you ask me.

hey thanks for the replies, Yes, there is a special sound to that posthorn solo!
(I have grown up listening to Mr. Herseth, and Mr. Ware) and the Di Vall is really nice. (and a nice change) |
