There's an article in today's NY Times (Tuesday, Nov. 18, p. F3, bottom) about cryogenically freeaing instruments, and Wayne Tanabe of the Brass Bow is briefly interviewed. While there's no good explanation of what freezing does (and indeed it seems some highly questionable research has been done), it's cool to see this topic make it into a major newspaper.
I think I posted a pretty detailed explanation of what this process does to a horn some time ago... maybe search for it. But based on my understanding of the process, it would make no sense to do this with a straight (i.e., unbent) instrument. Yet the article mentions that a major flute manufacturer uses the process. Go figure... |
