I found a CD in the used bin from remastered live performances in 1976 & 1979. It has many popluar standards. This is the first I've really heard from him (except for, what was it, "Wonderland by Night" that used to get a lot of radio play in '60s).
I was quite surprized. His playing is very "loose" (I really searched for a word - that's the best I could do). He growls, bites off the end of notes, glissandos, partial valves, flutter values, bends notes . . .
I expected his work would be pretty "straight", but he was quite a "jazzy" player.
Well worth the listen.

Harry was a very underrated jazz player. Probably because he was expected to play all those silly commercial hits that made him famous. The guy could smoke when called upon, and he could do it without ever practicing. Don’t you hate people like that? He did have a lot of personal flaws, but he could play.

"Wonderland by Night" was Bert Kambert (sp) around 1960. Harry James was a massive player and also had Betty Grabel for a wife. Great combination!!

If you want to check out a very good Harry James CD, listen to "Compact Jazz Harry James" on the Verve label. It has 16 tracks that you probably never heard HJ play before. He does a great job on all of them but really shines on "I Cover the Waterfront". The CD is dated 1987.
