From the "horses mouth" at the recent ITG, Thomas Gansch was with me at the Washington Music Center booth a fair amount of time and when asked about touring in the US he said from now on it will be only two weeks a year. The group can earn far more money in Europe and as the guys have been together for some time now and have families, they've opted to limit touring outside Europe. A shame for us who really love what they do but getting an agent in the US who has worked out well has also been a problem for them. See them when you can.

I saw them for the first time last year in Princeton, NJ. It was utterly incredible. Such a shame a group that talented - and with such an obvious and dedicated cult following - can't find a decent tour manager to make it profitable for them to come to the US more often.
Music is a tough business, folks, particularly in the US. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

FWIW, a few years back when they were at UCLA they were booked into a small auditorium and there was very little advertising. In fact, even the box office didn't seem to know about the appearance until shortly before the performance. That certainly turned off a lot of potential attendees. When the performance came there was an enormous line of people who were turned away. Seems to me that they could easily filled out a larger theater which I assume would have translated to more appropriate profit for a world-class group.
A few years later there were scheduled at another local Southern California college but only shortly before the performance, we learned that the performance wasn't even open to the public! How can that be profitable? And had I known earlier I might have driven to one of their other venues.
I guess I can't disagree that tour management seems to be lacking. These guys deserve to be on a pedestal.
To the extent that they prefer to limit touring to be with family, bravo for them. I sincerely hope that they balance their schedule so they never loose their love for what they do and that they continue to do it for many many years to come. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Its not just on college campuses where these guys receive a cool reception. The first opportunity I had to hear Mnozil Brass was at the ITG Conference in Dallas. I forget the year of that conference. But interestingly, their performance did not attract a full house for their gig. I suppose many conference attendees just thought, oh well, yet another fine European brass ensemble. I had no idea what to expect but was, of course, literally blown away by the performance. I had never heard of them prior to this and I became a life-long fan thereafter. I tried to explain to some of my friends at the conference just how crazy good these guys really were and I got blank looks. Their loss. |

I hope they stop in Atlanta on Feb 27 or 28. Their Atlanta performance was cancelled due to bad weather their last tour through here. _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

I can't believe they're going to the Villages, but not Chicago or Minneapolis. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

Best brass group in the world...I've said it before and I love superlatives since we should never do that with the arts...BUT:
Virtuosic playing of the highest order=can't get any better, only different
Best staging of any brass group=it's actually theatre
etc, etc..............I have gone on about them before.
As with politics, if you don't vote, you should not actually be entitled to an opinion about government. By the same token, until you have seen Mnozil LIVE, you will never fully understand their magical spell on audiences. Recordings and Youtube clips only give the tiniest inkling of what they are all about. See them live even once and you too will become a superfan of theirs for life.

They did a last-minute show at Northwestern U last time but yeah, I wish they'd do more around Chicago.

Seen them twice here in the UK and they are AMAZING !! I happened to be in Vienna last week and dragged my wife to the bar/restaurant that they take their name from opposite the music academy , the Monozil Gastwirtschaft Zum Kellerwolb. Food (and beer) top notch. Don't think it will turn me into Thomas Gansch though... |
