|
|
Hello!
It's that time of the year again and I have to find repertoire I haven't played yet. Some suggestions would be much appreciated.
Here's what I need:
-A 20th Century sonata that is not Pilss, Kennan, Hindemith, Stevens or Flor Peeters
-A piece in a more modern idiom composed in the last 50(ish) years
Thanks!

A few pieces to consider:
Byron Adams' Concerto (1983)
Charles Chaynes' Concerto (1956)
Luis Engelke's Sonata (2015)
Joseph Kaminski's Concerto (1941)
Paul Kirby's Sonata (1992)
Anthony Plog's Paradigms (2012)
John Prescott's Sonata #3 (2010)
Charles Reskin's Sonata (2007)
David Sampson's Notes from Faraway Places (2000)
Joseph Turrin's Intrada (1988)
Good luck! |

The George Antheil Sonata is an excellent piece, challenging to play and enjoyable for audiences.
For a more modern piece on the upper end of the difficulty spectrum, 'Masks' by Dana Wilson is a lot of fun. If you want something unaccompanied, I'm going to do a little self-promotion and suggest a piece I wrote and had published that you can see and listen to a bit here: https://qpress.ca/product/ghosts-in-the-machine-unaccompanied-trumpet-thorsteinsson/
Song Without Words by David John Lang is a great opportunity to bust out the flugelhorn. |

Greetings:
I've written over 50 works involving trumpet.
A bunch of recital works, two sonatas, at least 5 concertos now (depending how you count), chamber works, unaccompanied, etc.
Solos with band, with orchestra.
I used to play the trumpet professionally, so I admit, I have a bit of an affinity for it.
Here's one of my personal favorites - premiered by Chris Martin - The Storyteller.
Which now has versions w/ string orch, w/ brass quintet, or w/ wind ensemble.

My upcoming commissions include the Minnesota Orchestra and Chicago Symphony.
I'd invite you to explore a few or my works here:

Thanks!
