What's the most thrilling performance you've ever heard by a jazz trumpet player?
I just heard my choice on our local college radio station: "Perdido," by Lionel Hampton and the Just Jazz All Stars, with a trumpet solo by Charlie Shavers that started low, went higher and higher, and finished about nine choruses later so high my dog was begging for mercy. Wow! _________________ Jim Hatfield

The first time I heard Clifford Brown was his solo on "Cherokee". I think I need say no more. |

Maynard Ferguson... came to a high school clinic/contest in Colorado Springs late 76/early 77. He and his band played a concert that night. The the two winning bands, one of which was ours, got to play in the concert too.
Also saw him in Denver in 1986, but that earlier concert was the more memorable, in a high school gym. I believe his latest album was Chameleon at the time and a lot of the songs were off that album.

When I was a freshman is high school one of the other schools in town had "Don Ellis and his Orchestra" in their basketball gym for a money maker. That was out there. He jumped around alot, light show, screaming band and those outfits and the music...
I'm glad my mom took me to see him. Kind of embarrassing at the time with the senior trumpet players in my section in line in front of us.
Around '73
Good times. |

If I misunderstood the question...
On '33 Lp it would have to be when I was over at a friend's house and he had a McIntosh amp and some ESS paramid speakers. Remember those days?
I sat back and he cranked it up -- "Pure Music" and then "Some Skunk Funk" I've never been the same. |

Byron Stripling came to our school and played Vizzutti's Zamba with our top Jazz band. Absolutely amazing. If you want to watch it you can see it at
(and this link won't work because I cant figure out how to switch the HTML to "on")

Just copy and paste it in the URL and be amazed by his godliness.
Zamba starts at .40 |

The first time I ever saw Maynard Ferguson (around 1977) he was doing Rocky Theme, La Fiesta, Star Wars and a ton of other stuff. I was not familiar with his recordings when I first saw him and I was just blown away. _________________ Best Regards, Play Well!! |

I saw Maynard in 1972 for the first time and was blown away. Amazingly, one of the most memorable tunes at the concert was "Got The Spirit", where Bari-saxophonist Bruce Johnstone did an amazing solo that seemed to go on forever. He had the crowd going crazy before the rest of the band came in.

Hi,
Maynard, sometime in the early '70s when he played McArthur Park live . . . and as well as on his landmark album.
What energy, power and emotion!

The year was 1976. The venue was Rolling Meadows High School in Rolling Meadows, IL. Maynard and his band were playing songs like, "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", "Give it One", and my all-time favorite "MacArthur Park". Unbelievable show! It was THE performance that got me excited about playing trumpet. That one performance has kept me going on the horn for 27 years. Seems like yesterday. I'll never forget it. |

At the ITG Conference in Akron like 10 years ago, Arturo Sandoval played with the Airmen of Note. I haven't been to as many jazz shows as most of you, but this was one of the most thrilling spectacles I have ever witnessed and probably ever will.
The audience of mostly trumpet players was like a pack of "wild dogs." Everyone was going crazy!

I saw Clark Terry 10 years ago when I first picked up the instrument, I went in there not knowing what kind of emotions the trumpet could produce and left in awe. It was one of the most incredible performances I'd ever seen. |
