I have recently been introducing my students to the Caruso 'six notes'. Its been a long time since I have practiced them so I was interested after all this time how they would benefit my playing? As a student I was introduced to them by a trombonist and followed the system without much discernment. Demonstration time came around and I was happy to get through the 'six notes' the first time without a problem. However on the repeat things didn't go so well. I had problems getting back down from the C to the G and working my way back up to the C again. Even though I followed the rules my embouchure must have changed the first time through. On the second demonstration I was much more aware of keeping my lips in the same place with more consistent results. I definitely felt the 'burn' in the corners.
The Interval (2nds) range builder went well. The first time through I got up to a concert D on a very deep cornet mouthpiece (Wick 2) and the 2nd range up to a G.
I am looking forward to getting reacquainted with this system again this time with my students. |

If a player sets and resets the embouchure a lot the 6 notes can be quite taxing at first. Some of my students at the university did not like doing them for that reason.
But if you and your students can just zone out during the rests and not moving anything, accuracy and embouchure focus will improve. According to the band director, my students missed less after getting the 6 note routine.
Blowing my horn here(or not blowing my horn)...I can layoff for 3-6 months and still play duets with my grandchildren. That is because of 50 years of always starting off with the 6 notes.
Best of luck,
