I've always enjoyed listening to this tune ever since I saw The Godfather, which is, by the way, perhaps the greatest movie of all time.
Just throwing some good sounds out there. |

Have you ever noticed all the oranges in "The Godfather", both I and II?
Oranges everywhere. Meeting of the Five Families...oranges on the table. Vito is gunned down...oranges on the fruit cart. Same with Don Fannuci walking down the street during the "Festa". Vito with his grandson in the garden...eating an orange. Michael meets Appolonia's family...oranges on the table. Michael at Hyman Roth's birthday in Cuba...oranges on a table. Tom has dinner with Woltz...oranges on the table. There are more oranges elsewhere in the 2 movies.
Though I hate Pt III, I think there are oranges on the table in the big hotel meeting room where the bosses are meeting.
Francis, what's up with the oranges? |

I'm sorry to have to correct you. The soloist was Sidney Lazar, also known as "Symphony Sid". |

I also remember hearing from a reliable source that it was Maxwell.
Although perhaps two different people played it for Part I and II.

Originally there was orchestral music at the beginning of the film, through the Paramount logo and the Godfather title. In a separate recording session, the producers called in Sid to play the opening melody alone, replacing the orchestral music, up until the cut to Bonasera in the Godfather's office. Nick's question was about the opening melody, and Sid played the solo that you hear on the soundtrack. |

I studied with Jimmy Maxwell for several years. He was VERY proud of having played the theme for the Godfather movie.

To round it out, let's not forget Mario Guarneri on The Godfather III. _________________ RJM

Hi! New to here - I googled my Dad (Sid Lazar) and caught this thread. Just to clarify: Sid Lazar played the trumpet solo on The Godfather numbers 1 & 2. He says Mr. Maxwell had no part in playing these and that Mario played the solo for Godfather 3. Sounds to me like a case of mistaken ID! My dad is just learning how to use the internet - go Dad! - and will probably sign on to here when he gets up and running. Meanwhile, if you'd like to contact him for history or info, please feel free to contact me. He also suggested that you check with the Union as they have correct info on all the who-played-what stuff. |

Back to the oranges thing, but oranges play quite an important bit in The Sopranos as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpnY0cigr50
There's a whole lot of Orange goin on!
Great playing in all three of the films. I think it has to be one of the top 5 film trumpet solos of all time.

Edit: I'm leaving the following post here, just for its comedic value (and others have quoted it anyway, so there's no getting rid of it). Just be aware, the info in it, while kind of funny, is not exactly correct. I thought we were discussing "Symphony Sid" the famous DJ. Apprarently, the same knickname was givin to Sid Lazar the trumpet player. I didn't know that. I do now. Shame beith unto me for missing the different last names!
Symphony Sid the DJ died in 1984. But apparantly the other Symphony Sid, the trumpet player otherwise known as Sid Lazar is alive and well - and that's a good thing!
Here's my original post:

Wow! Cudos to Symphony Sid for tackling learning how to use the internet - a quarter of a century after he died!!! According to Wikipedia Sid Lazar passed away in 1984. Also from Wikipedia, complete with a citation:
Quote: | Not much is known about his youth, although he seems to have become a jazz fan as a teenager, and at one point tried to become a trumpet player. (Passman, 67)
Passman, Arnold. "The Deejays." New York: Macmillan, 1971, p 67

Jimmy Maxwell was the trumpet soloist for the Godfather. "Lazarlady" is nothing but a one-post troll.
