I just YouTube'd the Louis Armstrong version and it is in concert B♭ with a female vocalist who sounds like she must be an alto.
I don't think I have ever had this tune called in any other key than concert G (trumpet A) on any gig I've been on where it's been played.
Many people only blow over the 12 bar blues part, but I personally prefer to go back and forth between the 12-bar part and the 16-bar (minor) part.
Bottom line is that you ought to play this in the key that allows you to play your best, but if there is a vocalist, then the vocalist's key needs to be your key.
Any thoughts on this version? I can identify some of the notes but mytheory is awful, and not sure if maybe a half step out!

The vocal version cited above is in Bb concert, almost certainly to accomodate the singer's range.
The original key is G concert (most of Armstrong's recordings).
Lots of folks play this in F concert for some reason. (There are so many tunes in this style that are in F, I'm not sure why one would want to switch to this key, but there you have it.)
If I were going at it for the first time, I'd learn it in all three keys. It's not terribly difficult and it's good practice anyway. _________________ Jeff Helgesen

Regarding it in G, that's the key I learned it in.
The original concert key is G. Maybe lazy, lack of transposing? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird
