Ronman...Took this from Yamaha website....TR-13A4a 16.20
Took this from Schilke website....13A4a 16.76
Are you sure your Yamaha had a bigger cup diameter? Do you possibly have older models? |

chase1973...What did you think of the 10A4A versus the 13A4A playing both. Which did you like better? Thanks |

jvf1095 - Different mouthpiece manufacturers measure their rim ID at different depths from the top of the rim, which can account for these differences. The models I have were purchased new within the last 3 years, so I’m not sure if the this constitutes “older models”. The Schilke 13A4a at 16.76mm is .660” which is .009” larger than my measurement, and .001” greater than my Yamaha measurement.

I've played both pieces quite a bit. Although the two look almost identical on the comparator, I find them very different. To me, the 13A4a feels bigger and the rim flatter than the 10A4a. FWIW, the 10A4a works much better for me. I play it with a #2 Stomvi coupler on a Calicchio L1s2, playing almost nothing but big band lead. _________________ 2006 Buick Lucerne |

Yes and thanks 3B.. In the short time I'm looking at these, the 10 is different in a sense that the diameter is smaller (16.76 vs 16.43 for the 10). Also, I noticed that although the shanks are the same length, and that they are an "A" backbore; the 10 is narrower in the throat for a longer length. (About a quarter inch more than the 13). If I hold them up to the light, the 10's throat even looks a bit narrower. So playing the 10, does it improve your range over the 13; or just make it easier to play at your range level? Thanks!! |

Right now, I'm trying to compare a Schikle 10A4A with the Yamaha 10A4A. Yamaha's do run smaller even with the same numbering system. To that end, the diameter of the Yamaha is 16.20 compared to the Schikle being 16.43. Has anyone compared these? |

I have all 3 of them in front of me now.
4 actually, because one of the two 13A4a mouthpieces is an older one, which has a different rim contour to the newer version.
I made a lead imprint of the older one, and used that as a gauge for the others.
Yes, depth is the same on the 13A4a (Yamaha and Schilke) and also the 10A4a.
The Yamaha has a more relaxed feel to the bite so feels bigger to me.
The older 13A4a (which I prefer) is slightly deeper than all of them.
The newer 13A4a (with the new rim contour) feels slightly smaller on the lips.
Hope this helps.

Thanks trumpethead. I PM'd you to respond to your PM. But I'm glad you posted this, because it might help someone besides me. |

I'm not a double-C guy, but I do spend a lot of time in high-C-to-G-above range, and neither piece has an advantage in that regard. I do find that the 13A4a has a little fatter sound, but that my endurance on the 10A4a is better, which, for me, is more important. _________________ 2006 Buick Lucerne |

Thanks Type3B. What you just said helps me a lot. At my level (at this point "A" above the staff), I notice that the 10A4A makes it just a bit easier to "slot" that note. And for me, my endurance is better because (for me anyway) the 10 diameter is smaller. To your point, YES, endurance is more important, especially where I'm at right now. Build endurance first, & the range will come. |
