Well, I am back coming back...again...after a layoff,(I played flugel a few times with granddaughters), from March of 2016. For those of you who are new to the forum, I was a pro lead player from 1969-2001, Then a 12 year layoff. Then a comeback followed by several long layoffs. Now 3 weeks in.
Name dropping: We did a concert with Bill Watrous. I had a rough rehearsal after a tough gig the previous night. The concert went well and I got to drive Bill back to the airport. He told me something that blew my mind at the time.
"In New York, the lead players wait for the notes to come out"
In Detroit we worked very hard to get the notes out....too hard.
Back to the future: As a supplement and balance to my normal Caruso inspired routine I added some "whisper" phrases. America, (my country tis of thee) played very soft and slow in acending half steps. Breaks between keys. Very legato tonguing. Lots of support but very little air and effort.
I wait for the notes to come out!
I made it to the key of F. Even though I can play very loud and sustained Fs at this point, waiting for the notes to come out at a pianissimo level gets me to Cs and a passing tone D. For me. this adds great balance to a heavy routine. _________________ Schilke B5

Addendum: For the whisper phrases, it helps playing in a large, live room. My practice room is dead and dry which is ok most of the time. But the bio feedback is much better when you can play the room.
Thanks,
