Hi all,

I have a Conn V1 flugelhorn on the way and through research I saw that GR makes a mouthpiece specifically for this horn. (for the taper as I understand) I currently play a 66FL and still love it, even after having switched over to the Pickett mpcs. I still find myself on this piece and want to know if anyone has any experience with the 66FD and its comparison/differences, pros, cons, etc. Any FD owners really, not just the 66. Any comments are welcome, but would love some feedback from any V1 owners.

Thanks!

I have both FD and FL pieces. The FD works great in the Flugel, but also sounds awesome in the trumpet, giving it a really silky, flugel-ish sound.

Thanks Matt! Another question for you. I've switched over to the Pickett like of mpcs and love them. But I've yet to find a Pickett that gives me that same quality of sound and response I get on the GR. I have a 3FL and 3FLT that didn't give me the sound I was looking for. Have any suggestions or could you point me in the right direction? I might email Peter as well.

I personally have a Conn V1 flugel and the FD is much better than the FL. Better intonation, articulation, sound...everything! Upper register is much more solid as well. Certainly give it a shot on your V1 and it will also be very cool on your trumpet.

How do you use a flugel mouthpiece on trumpet?

The taper on the shank is appropriately sized to fit both larger flugelhorn pipes and trumpet receivers. There is a little bit of info on it here: http://grmouthpieces.com/mouthpieces.html

Bri can offer more specifics.

Peter's great, and you may also chat with Eric. Be sure you have the right taper mouthpiece, that can dramatically effect the way the mouthpiece and horn work together...even if it "fits."

BTW, come back to Cincy sometime!!! We miss you!

The FD was designed to fit with the Conn V1 flugel and trumpet. You can try it on other flugels but it may not be optimum. Try it on trumpet to get a flugel-like sound if you need to travel and can not take a flugel, or like Wayne Bergeron does and wants to "sound like Chet".

Check out the shank engagement diagram on this page to get more of an understanding on how GR designed this series:

I'm using a French taper leadpipe on my Kanstul 1525 (slightly better intonation). The standard GR 66FL fits and works fine. Would the 66FD, with less engagement, work acceptably? I am primarily interested in trying it on my Calicchio Bb trumpets but if it will fit the flugel, it might be an interesting change in sound. Thank you.
