I THINK its the closest thing to a MIDI interface trumpet that they have. You finger with the 3 buttons on top and you have to twist the drum to change partials, because nobody has yet developed a way to sense the difference between a Low, Middle, High and Dble High C....(Though, there certainly is one:)). I THINK. but im not positive.

These EVIs (Electronic Valve Instrument) and EWIs (Electronic Woodwind Instrument) came out about twenty years ago (early 80s). Matt Wallace used to double on one in Maynard Ferguson's band back in the 80s. Haven't heard much about these instruments since then. One thousand dollars seems like a lot of money for twenty-year-old technology.

Stuart (above post) is correct on the method of playing the EVI.

I used to have one until I sold it on ebay two years ago. It's the closest electronic thing to a real trumpet BUT it's a totaly different instrument. It was designed as a device that brass players could use to play electronic sounds...like strings, clarinet, keys etc. I used to use it for string parts and played it through a Roland D110. The unit came with an analog synth but the sounds were pretty lame. Only the fingerings are similar and as far as I can remember you must always play the lower register fingerings. Your right hand plays 2 sets of "valve buttons that are fixed and touch sensitive. There is an upper and lower set. The upper allows you to use alternate fingerings. Your left hand does the real work. Your left thumb activates the octave roller keys and your left forefinger is used to "jump fourths". You see...this instrument cannot sense lip vibrations. You must change the pitch with your hands not your lip. The mouthpiece is a rubberized tubelike device that you blow into. It is a difficult instrument to play unless you devote alot of time to it. It's not an instrument that you can double on if you just want to pick it up and go. You have to LEARN this EVI. I bought mine when they came out around 1985 and paid $850.00. I think I got most of my money back when I sold it....Not a bad investment considering I used it over 15 years.

John Swana plays the EVI with Gerald Veasleys Electric Mingus Project. If you ever get a chance to see Swana play EVI, GO!!! I guarantee you will be absolutely astonished at watching and hearing him play. I don't think the price is high considering it is extremely rare these days to find. The EVI is 25 years old, practically in mint condition. The technology IS old, but I am one of the lucky few (not for long) to have an AKAI EVI and understand the true value of such an item. I have a friend who finally received his custom EVI from Nile Steiner and it looked like a black paddle made out of parts from a hardware store.

Hi, Mike, I am from Pennsauken, right by you, originally and was just wondering who you aquired the EVI from. I have a pretty good idea and if you don't want to say publically send me a private message. If it belonged to who I think it did I may be very interested in buying it.

PS I remember when you were at U of A and you were a killin' player then too!
