I had a chance to try a raw brushed brass Phaeton trpt today that was designed by Wayne Tanabe of the Brass Bow. It had a wonderful sound and felt vry comfortable to play. Has anyone else had any experience with these horns?

Thanks!

I played one briefly at the Bow. Very nice horn. Plays very easily with a warm sound. Very well made.

I posted a few days ago about having tried the raw brass model up at The Brass Bow. I really liked the horn. It's been gnawing at me ever since. The list price of $1745 was too rich for my blood, but I've seen the raw brass available for $1275 online. I wasn't seriously going to pull the trigger on one until I stumbled across an announcement from Donovan Bankhead at Springfield Music for their end-of-year inventory reduction. I snagged their last raw brass Phaeton this afternoon for $949. At that price I couldn't resist. They still have one left in lacquer at that price if anyone's interested.

Donovan's a heck of a nice guy to boot!

Let us know how you like it once you have had time to play it for a while. Do you have Donovans number or email address?

Thanks!

He's having serious email difficulties at the moment; my emails to him kept coming back as undeliverable. I finally gave up and called the store.

I've got my email working now. I've switched to a service that blocks spam, and I didn't quite have it set up correctly.

Anyway, it's all better now!

Here's a link to a site with decent information on these trumpets. I really like the look of the onyx finish myself.

The one I opted for was the top-most in the photo that has the 3 trumpets.

I have yet to find any web site that has *decent* pics of the horn. When I get mine I'll take some closeup shots and post them.

Nice appearance, but I wonder about the playability. I've found more than one reference (TPIN list, usenet) from people who have tried the onyx, and it was very dark, almost "dead" in comparison to other finishes).

I went back and played the horn again (raw brass finish) and actually took time to really familiarize myself with the horn.
A few observations. It had a very even, warm tone. The valves were very smooth and fast. It responded very quickly - much faster then I expected. I had no trouble playing high register, middle register or low register. The horn spoke very easily. It didn't feel heavy to me. The workmanship was pretty good - I wouldn't say it was perfect. I was able to do something on it that I normally have trouble doing. On the high c to high d lip trill I have trouble getting it to be smooth and easy. I had no problem doing it on this horn. I was surprised. I don't know if I finally got it right or it was the horn. However, when I tried it with my Bach Strad it didn't come out very smooth. It was a very nice horn. A friend of mine thinks it looks very gaudy. I think it looks just fine.
