I need to expand my collection of trumpet duet books! Looking for suggestions for books of all difficulty levels and all styles. What are your favorite duets, and please include a short description of what kind of book it is.
Here are some of my favorites:
Pietzsch: 24 Duets...classic, musically solid duos. Moderately difficulty, but rather long pieces.
Belwin Master Duets, Easy....perfect for lessons with youngsters
Rubank Selected Duets, Easy-Medium and Advanced books. This must be just about the most common set out there, and for good reason.
Thomas Morley Complete Canzonets (Balquidder)....very nice, good for getting used to the rhythmic independence of renaissance counterpoint.
Di Lasso/Baldwin: Cantabile Duets...more beautiful renaissance pieces
All the Bach Duo Concerto arrangements edited by Vacchiano, published by Colin. Very difficult, probably impossible to get through most of them in terms of endurance, but great music and tons of fun to practice on.
Blumel: Duos in the Low Register...funny little book, but a nice change of pace
Bozza Dialogue for 2 trumpets...Solid 20th century recital music
Persichetti Parable...ditto
Castrerede: Six Pieces Breves En Duo...possibly my favorite trumpet duet music of all. Great performance repertoire.
The Rite of Spring, arranged by Hoffman. Ed, you madman!
All three Mueller books published by Balquidder...A great way to practice standard solo repertoire pieces with a friend or student.
As far a jazz style duets, my favorites are the Bugs Bowers Bop Duets and Erik Jekabson's books, all published by Colin.
Please help me out by sharing your favorites! _________________ Daniel Gianola-Norris |

Jack Gales 12 Jazz Duets
Trumpet Sessions, Compiled and Arranged by Don Cassel and Livingston Gearhart (with several trios, quartets and other trumpet ensembles)
And--not sure why this is missing from the list so far--Gatti's 33 Duets for Trumpet
and Amsden's Celebrated Duets (free downloads available). These are taxing and often painfully out-of-date but still fun to read through and play. _________________ Member since 2008. |

My favorite books recently are the Fisher progressive books.

I got to browse the whole Hickeys duets bin at ITG last year and these guys really stuck out in terms of good arrangements of classical pieces, plus a few new pieces thrown in. Its like the Alessi/Sachs book but more pieces and on average a bit easier. _________________ Thane Standard Large Bb / Monette Unity B6-7M mpc

Lots of great books listed so far. I particularly like the Mueller and Voxman books.
Haley's "Bach: 15 Two-Part Inventions" and Mathie's "Telemann for Two Transposing Trumpets" are wonderful moving transpositions in the tradition of Vacchiano's "Moving Transcription" version of Sachse and Porret's "24 Vocalises" version of Bordogni's vocalises. Great for studios.
A few that I did not see listed already are:
Hering's "Bach for Two Trumpets" (intermediate/advanced)
Bob Zottola's "Challenging Duets" (advanced; intended for developing commercial players) -- along the lines of Phil Collins' "Pops Orchestra" but in duet form |

When I sort the qPress catalogue by most popular duet books, I must say I am pleasantly surprised. What are the odds that my favourite all-time duet book is the highest selling?

All the good suggestions here sent me back to my filing cabinet. A couple of things not mentioned:
Ernest R. Miller, Brass Duet Notebook I and II Southern Music Company
Duets in Vol. I are drawn from Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, those in Vol. II from J. S. Bach
Rich Willey, I'd Rather Be Boppin' Vol. 1-3 Boptism Music Publishing
Bop duets on the changes for standards. Increasingly more difficult as one moves through the three volumes. Also Home Cookin': 24 Dixie Duets Fer Young'Uns)
And finally (maybe already listed in the links to Hickey's catalog--is there anything they don't have?)
Hubert Arnold, Sonata for Two Trumpets and Piano Southern Music Company
Emile Baudrier, Fughetta Alphonse Leduc--Paris _________________ Member since 2008. |
