This website appears to be of a new Martin company, headed by a descendant of the Martins, Richard, and is selling a Committee made by Kanstul. Sorry if someone mentioned it already but I didn't see anything here about it

Hey, if he can get that for it, more power to him. Good opening page/story. Having been involved in a family-owned business, with all its ups and downs, I can appreciate what they've been through as a family.

The horn is good.

If it's the same spec as Kanstul's 1603, it already plays as well as the mid-50s Martin Committee Deluxe I had for comparison during the Experience thread I published. If it has the tapered tuning slide crook, it's better than the vintage Martin, IMO. As for the price, it's the same as what Kanstul asks for the 1603, so that's fair. It is a truly hand-made to order instrument.

I wish him well.

Is that a lot for a trumpet? Yes it is. Is that a lot compared to the cost of other musical instruments? No it isn't. As musical instruments go trumpets are one of the least expensive instruments out there and, with good care, they last almost forever. Plus, if you qualify, you can claim depreciation and transfer some of the cost to your fellow taxpayers by reducing your own tax liability.

In terms of enjoyment vs. cost even the most expensive trumpet is the bargain of a lifetime.

More power to the new Committee. The horn looks beautiful and, no doubt, plays as great as the greatness of the player allows.

Yeah, and some new super cars cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Which is just as relevant to the guy needing a good trumpet and doesn’t have a lot of money.

I'd pay that much for the horn in a heart beat...if I weren't married.

THAT resonates around here almost as well as a Kanstul .

Just curious what happened to the Martin trademark? Is it in the public domain? I feel like I saw another type of "new" Martin Committee on sale on ebay and that maybe Taylor or Adams also does a Committee-style trumpet. Did the descendent get access to the trademark or if it's now out of trademark can we expect more new trumpets branded by Committee by different companies?

That's very interesting--so the descendent may have opted to produce a new Martin but in theory anyone can produce Martin Committees.

And on reading the patent, it was Conn-Selmer's. Very surprised that they would allow it to lapse...

The Benge trademark is up for renewal in 2019.

It needs to go to Michael Thomas or Kanstul.

If Kanstul worked so hard at trying to re-create the Martin committee, with their 1603 design, I guess I’m trying to figure out how this Kanstul made “New” Martin by Richard Martin, would be different or better from their current 1603 model?

My guess is it's the exact same horn but with the Martin logo.

My confusion lies in trying to compute the market. You have hundreds, perhaps more, of the original Martins around... hell, I found one in an antique store the size of my closet. You've got the Lawler C7, the Kanstul 1603, Shilke did a Martin design a while back, now this at a price point higher than the others. Maybe they did their homework, but this is such a specialty item with a narrow market. Good luck!

It seems like a solid business venture to me. Looks like the only expense is making a simple website, answering questions over the phone, take an order over the phone. Then email kanstul the go-ahead to put the martin name on a 1603. Drop ship to purchaser. So that is a one man super-part-time job with about 100 bucks overhead a year to maintain website. If he sells one horn a year he is swimming in profit. If i'm wrong forgive me please, and i very well may be wrong.

More power to him i say. Its just a angle at making money off name.

I did think however that the martin name was being used by an international company. The "Olds" name is also being used. I am assuming that Mr. Martin has gotten the brand back, or else it could be a can of worms.

I'm told he hired a lawyer to make the proper arrangements to use the Martin name.
