Hereīs an eBay auction for a new vintage Martin Committee, said to have never been sold.
My question: If it was brand new, why did they bother to do replate it? Wouldnīt it be much more valuable in its original finish (even if the lacquer was cracked)?
Besides, with all this gold and silver, this horn looks overdressed to me. Itīs just not the right thing to do to a Committee, IMHO.

Wow...That's a horrible thing to do to such a horn.

A horrible thing?
That is a beautiful trumpet. Does the plating adversely affect the sound?

Who cares what it looks like......only thing that matters is how it plays!

Wow, that's incredible. I don't know if that's out of character for that type of horn, but I wouldn't mind having a horn that looks like that. Now if I could only get myself to sound as good as that looks.....

Atom,
I should have elaborated on what I said. In my opinion, the older Committee horns are already beautiful in that they're not flashy, yet they're still unique among trumpets. I don't know how the plating job affects the sound (although I doubt it's drastically different), but visually, I would rather see it as it came out of the factory. It's a shame to know that a real "time capsule" of a horn was used as the starting platform for such a "hot rod." I would liken it to someone finding a yet-undriven, pristine 1960 Ferrari and pulling the body off and trying to make a Batmobile or some such.

With all that in mind, I wonder about the condition of the horn originally. The seller (who obviously knows *something* about horns) might have used the replating to cover up flaws or damage that would make the horn otherwise unsaleable.

But, in the end, I fear that this guy just "flashy-fied" the poor thing to make it look more appealing to kids and parents on ebay.
Hmm,
John

If you think that's overdressed, wait til you hear about this... a RED Martin Committe with fully engraved gold plated (underneath the red) bell. Now THAT'S overdressed. It looks like one of those crappy colored horns on eBay. It plays amazingly, but no one would take the owner seriously.

If you look at "Bach Shops" horns on ebay over a period of time you will notice they go for appearince, not playable of the horn.

Speaking of the old committees! I notice that eventhough Chris Botti bought a Monette a year or so ago he still plays his old , raw brass committee, when he is in concert or recording. If you get a good one they are great horns. I have played a couple that were horrible. I notice that Lawler is making a copy (with intonation improvements) of the Committee. I will se Bruce Lee this weekend and will play his. That should be interesting.

I personally think that looks really nice, and I'm not usually a fan of lavish looking trumpets.

Does seem odd that they claim it has never been sold, it does look like a replating job.
