During my mpc search I spent some time reading the ridiculous bach mpc book.
You know the one where they give you the "BS" on each mpc they offer and what it provides the user. Lots of makers provide these and there all amusing to read.

So I tried this piece because it "claimed" to be free blowin and have a shallower cup "to
"facilitate range"(ha ha ha ha). It is as described but still sounds lowsy.

Anyone ever tried this mpc? I never hear anyone talking about it?

PS: I hear the "3D" works best if you put on the special glasses they give you(ha ha )

I tried a 3D and was not impressed. I used to play a 3C and wanted something for lead and upper register playing. The problem with the 3D and 3E is the backbores. I don't think they are tight enough. I have since switched to Warburton and am pleased. Warburton gives you many choices of backbores so you can find one that gives you the sound and characteristics you're looking for.

I play a bach 3f for somelead stuff. But i have pretty thin lips so it works ok for me Only thing i dislike about the 3d,e,f is how shrp the bite is on the piece..Can't wait till i have enough money for that monette BL2.

Dustin:

Too much inner rim bite is one of the main problems I have with all bach pieces.

A friend of mine blows lead on a 3e, sounds great. Of course, he is playing a Z, so the larger backbore don't hurt.

I gotta go back to the bach book. I never new there was a E, F and B versions of these pieces!

As a side note, interesting how the stories of successful bach users continues to add up.

I had been a 3C user for about 12 years. In the course of those years, I tried a Bach 3D especially for upper register playing. However, I didn't like the way it felt or played and had better luck with the 3C.

I also agree about the "bite" on the Bach mouthpiece in general - too sharp! I am now a dedicated Bob Reeves mp user and love them more than anything I've ever played.

I played a 3D for about 3 years and would still be playing it had I not found a Warburton with a slightly different, not necessarily better, bite to it. It did everything that I needed it to do more than satisfactoraly. Lead, jazz, light classical, piccolo, it did the job everytime. In regards to the backbore, I feel that the Bach 76 backbore (that is standard on all D and F cup mouthpieces) is the best made Bach backbore.

Clarion:

I too moved in to Reeves mpc (from a 5C bach to 43M Reeves) after my long history with Bach.

Although the rim felt much better, I still didnt like the sound(I played it with quality horns and a decent embouchure) and it blew tight.

I had it drilled out a bit and as in most cases made it worse.

Won't be surprised if you end up trying some other brands down the line. Although I myself am not through trying Bob's quality products!

PS: I ask myself how many times I'm gonna have people tell me how good Wharburton mpcs are before I give it a try. I like how you can switch rims and all.

IF you're looking around the Bach 3D size, this mouthpiece makes the Yamaha Xeno easier to play high upto B over the staff with good articulation. I tried an old one with small letters on it. Sadly the rim was awful and the bite bit me.

My current favourite is Mark Curry.
GR comes a close second....
I can play 660M in big band, 3ZM for light stuff and a 3BC for heavy orchestra.

You have to know what you are trying to achieve by changing the mpc and not lose anything you already had.

GOOD LUCK !

A response to the "Reeves M" being too tight statement above. You might try the Reeves "C" cups since they already come with a 26 throat. For me the C 26 is too open . I alway thought the Reeves C cups had a very clean clear sound - certainly the rims have a nice soft bite in case you are tired of walking around with a big red ring carved in your lips from other brands. Other mouthpiece makers can put that rim on any cup you want or you can have them cut and threaded for Warburton backbores. (Though with their current price its cheaper to have Warburton or Kanstul just duplicate the top for you.) In defense of the Bach catalog copy - how else would we have learned what "scintillating" meant when we were teenagers?

I've played the Bach 3D, but prefer an e66MS by GR Tech. They are similar size mpc's, but the GR rim is much more comfortable.

bach's bite isn't as bad as others, well that is more than likely because I played a bach 7C for 7 years then foolishly switched to a parduba
