I have a lot of horns that I sadly never play, but I can't get rid of them for sentimental reasons and also, they are worth more to me than the cash I could get for them. This includes 2 cornets, a C trumpet, a piccolo, and backup B flat.

12, with one coming this summer. I keep what works. No sentimentality here.

My 2 piston valve horns, a cornetto and a tenor trombone will be leaving, post-pandemic, as they are hard on my hands and/or shoulder. I’ll probably donate them to the local high school which appreciates receiving my cast-offs.

I’ll be left with two identical rotary horns (one back up), which are the most comfortable (to hold and operate) trumpets I’ve owned, two identical soprano trombones and five natural trumpets & bugles in various keys.

That’s likely it for me. I’m done accumulating stuff.

i'm curious about your experience with the cornetto. Trouble with your hands and/or shoulder aside, have you found it particularly difficult to play? I go to an annual retreat with a chapter of the SCA (...an inclusive community pursuing research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat and culture.) and have been intrigued with the possibility of bringing a more period instrument. I gave the recorder and sackbut a brief try but didn't hit it off well with either.

It’s a resin A466 Monk with the tiny acorn mouthpiece. I can’t do much with it. I’m sure that working with an instructor would make a big difference if I could hold it comfortably.

Just what's in my signature. I'm on the prowl for a flugel and piccolo in the near future, and maybe another cornet or two if I find the right models at the right price.

I am sentimental over a couple horns that I grew up with (The martin and the King Legend). And I like collecting older "unique" stuff. Others I could part with. (I'm done fighting my Bach C....). The Bb Xeno I own is a work tool -- The school that I teach at uses them so I own one to know exactly what the students are experiencing. It's a great horn, but as soon as they move on, that horn will go and be replaced by whatever we find next.

hibidogrulez (who asked how do you decide which to play), it's all based on the sound concept I want. A trumpet is a tool, same as hammer. To a degree, a trumpet is a trumpet. Some are just better suited for some sound concepts. I can hang a picture nail with a 2 lb. sledge but a tack hammer is a better tool for the job. I don't necessarily recommend framing a wall with either.

--The List--

Bb: King 2070SGX, Early 70's Kenosha Martin Committee (pre-production), 1923 Conn 22B, King Silver Flair (UMI), 1921-22 King Liberty, '30s DeVries, "Bach" (Heavily modified...). Yamaha 8335(2)

C: Bach 229 with MK leadpipe and slide. (Yamaha 9445NYS Gen 3 is in my near future)

D/Eb: Yamaha 761

Picc: Stomvi Master, Couesnon Monopole 3 valve Long Model

Cornets: Schilke A2C, 1921 Buescher, Yamaha 631

Flugel: Modified Blessing Scholastic

Getzen Titlist Soprano Bugle

Mystery German Rotary Bb on the way

I'm at around 10 now, almost all bought used. I started with a Carol 506 and a pocket C. Along the way I've bought some other Carols (one more open, one more commercial), 2 Bachs (a 37 and 72), two Mauriats (a heavier 600 with gold bell and a large bore 655), a Fides C, and a Jupiter flugelhorn and piccolo. I'm also at around 15 mouthpieces.

For me the gear is a fun hobby. Eventually I may settle down to a forever horn, but out of the gate I was curious how different factors affected the blow, sound, etc. At some point I will try to list four or five of them for sale.

I do regret buying some problem horns (a used Carol with bad red rot and a Bach that's taken a lot of work to be only OK). Someone here had a maxim about "don't buy other people's problems."

@hibidogrulez: the four in the signature serve a real purpose:

Bach & flugel: big band, soul, funk, rock
Schmidt rotary: orchestra
Bass trumpet: brass group

As for the additional horns not in the signature:

The Blessing is my first trumpet and I keep it as a backup and for sentimental reasons. Nowadays it basically consists of red rot and silver plate but is still tight and has no leaks. Good for playing Christmas carols in the rain.

The pTrumpet is my travel horn. Pre-COVID I had quite some business trips and it is quite nice to practice long tones and the like in the hotel.

The Hüttl C I just bought to play with the house band (budding guitar player, piano, flute). I am teaching myself to read concert pitch but the kids don’t always have the patience to wait for dad to sort out his music

The Silver Colibri would make a GREAT jazz horn, has a 5.2 or so inch nickel silver bell, but I do have to admit that I don’t currently play it. Keeper nonetheless.

I just grew my small collection (see signature) by bringing an XO 1700R Piccolo into the mix this past week. It has been challenging so far, but I'm starting to work out a sensible approach. I have a close friend from the local Symphony that will help me through the early stages face to face when the Covid curtain raises up!

I have also worked out a trade of my Yamaha 6335S for a barely used Yamaha 8335RGS that I got to try a few years ago. Absolutely no mileage on it since so I'm looking forward to basically breaking it in during the next couple of weeks.

Quick update: the current list is in the signature. Sadly I had to sell the bass trumpet due to issues with my left hand. I may or may not look into a lighter instrument or possibly a British baritone at some point but with two incoming horns right now, my 2023 budget is pretty much gone already Wishing everyone a successful and healthy new year!

That's quite a collection indeed! You own as many cornets as I do horns in total (2 Bb trumpets, 1 Bb cornet & 1 flugelhorn). And I was even thinking that I might have a tad too many lol .

To me, a horn's just a tool not a collector's menagerie. To wit, the horns in my signature block.

Much change in the way my life is unfolding over the past few months is also bringing a revision of my trumpet stable as well!

My wife passed away 2 years ago, and at 71, I was well on my way to the final laps, or so I would have surmised! Curve ball...I met a much younger trumpet player and well versed pianist during a performance last Easter and as those things go, we ended up in a short runway, vertical takeoff relationship. We got engaged over the Christmas holidays and are planning a May 2023 wedding at her family Dairy Farm.

Hornwise, her late 1980s Bach Strad 37 (a very good example of the breed) has become part of my harem and she has adopted my Yamaha RGS. I suspect that as time goes on, many more changes will develop! She is also easy to surprise gift (new Torpedo bag, mouthpiece case, BlowDry Brass, etc.).

BTW, it is a whole new experience to have a regular practice partner, though it is very easy to get distracted, if you know what I mean. We are preparing for the upcoming performance season over the next few days so lots of time in the practice room together! What a blessing, 2 wonderful women in one lifetime! Whoda thunk!!!!

Life is Short, find the Joy in it!

Happy New Year 2023!

Mike

Currently have two trumpets and one cornet. My 1965 H.N. White King Super 20 Silversonic symphony trumpet, 1966 H.N.White King Silver Flair trupet, and 1965 H.N. White King Super 20 Silversonic Master Model Cornet. I just made arrangements for a 1967 Bach 37 trumpet that I will get a 7 leadpipe put on and should have it in may from centexbrass.

I had the plan to quit purchasing trumpets but hey, over here in The Netherlands we have marktplaats.nl and I cannot resist looking at horns that are for sale, mostly for silly prices...

So after selling my Getzen Eterna 700 I bought two (!) 'new' horns: A Besson Academy and an Antoine Courtois Balanced, both very good horns, especially the Besson surpriced me

So for now Conn Director and Parrot Bb trumpets for taking with me on vacation, Conn 22B NYS from 1924 very nice, Getzen ML and L Eterna from The Dark Ages, Antoine Courtois Balanced L bore and the Besson Academy (L bore as well).

Just one C-trumpet, Antoine Courtois Mod. Delmotte

8 trumpets and 1 flugelhorn: Schenkelaars Prestige

A little bit too much but I can be lucky not collecting tuba's haha
