@delano
Good call sir. Hey I love Valentino. His era and prior they had personality and Valentino has bucketloads, and he is a sensationally successful rider. Impossible to overestimate no.46, BUT, in terms of sheer success, it remains Giacomo Agostini. |

I did not follow motor racing in the sixties but from what I read had Agostini a lot of help of the superiority of the MV Augusta AND had much more possibilities because of the two competitions then, 350 and 500. |

Btw, you guys with vintage bikes in Europe have it much better than the U.S. where no one seems to care, or know how to service them. And it's auction sales only, along with inflated values for bikes that sit and collect dust, aren't ridden.

There are a bunch of exceptional trumpet players out there at the moment and it's nearly impossible to compare them fairly, since many excel at different types of playing, or display remarkable versatility cross genres.
I'd be hard pressed to pick a 'winner' and defend it against at least another two or three dozen also worthy of consideration.
Still, at the end of the day, and knowing he has apparently finally stopped performing publicly well into his nineties, it's still Doc Severinsen's sound that I gravitate to, especially live. I've seen a lot of fantastic players live, including Doc, but I've never heard anyone make a hall ring or grab my undivided attention quite the way he did.
If I could somehow snap my fingers and emulate his sound in my own playing, I could die happy, so I guess that's my answer. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

I'm trying to think, if I were going to die tomorrow who would I want to hear one last time? Or, for the first and last time?

Phrased in many ways "they will remember you for any less than perfect performance" if that has any value (and only if), everyone is one clam away from being mediocre
Seriously, I was talking to a nationally recognized organist about TAPS on Memorial Day when he brought up the subject of the President John Kennedy Funeral world wide performance of TAPS by Keith Clark, the Principle Bugler with the US Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” Seems the only thing he could remember about it was the infamous “Broken Note” in the 24 notes!
Judge not...

O.K. enough silliness, already. This is so indicative of this forum. The topic is The Best Trumpet Player on the Planet. To whit -

To me, if you're going to be "best on the planet", one criterion would be demonstrated world class excellence in more than one style of playing. So yeah, Wynton has to be (IMO) on any short list for consideration.
OTOH, I've seen lots of players who are "super world class" in one style, but also perform in other styles and they're "pretty darn good", so then I'm like, how stunningly good are they in their own genre? _________________ '78 Getzen Eterna Severinsen

Honestly, best at what? Trumpet playing is not one singular thing.
Best at raising the bar? Herseth and Andre.
Best Jazz Guy? Marsalis?
Best Principal guy? (I actually don't know right now. Maybe Martin? Inouye? Rolfs?)
Best Solist? Hardenberger? Balsom? Antonsen? Lindemen? Vizzutti? Nakariokov?
Best commercial and lead guy? Bergeron?
Best at what I value? Matthias Höfs. _________________ "To have have fun, to learn, to improve. To share my perspective on how to navigate playing the trumpet to the best of my ability. To preserve and champion high art, artistic integrity, and live instrumental music."

Thinking in categories like highest notes, biggest sound, fastest tonguing seems not very rewarding. Let's make it simple: which player delivers the best musical content to us.
There is the problem of style, especially classical music and jazz are different paradigm.
Let's take the piano as example: Horowitz for classic, Art Tatum for jazz.
For trumpet: Dokshizer for classic, Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong for jazz (to difficult to make a choice here).
If you want a third style, the commercial one, it could go between Doc and Harry James. Piano I don't know.
I don't think we have to limit ourselves to living players. Those who left us are still around on records, concert registrations, clips, movies.
Problem solved,

I continue to be just blown away by how tasteful Sergei Nakariakov is. So, today, he's my favorite. _________________ Please join me as well at:

After deep thought and much elimination, Conrad "Goz" Gozzo would be top of the list, at least for me!

Yeah ... I kinda agree with you.
He is a legend. Matinee-idol, movie-star good looks, also.
I never had the opportunity to watch him ride.
I DID see Mike Hailwood and John Surtees.
However; he did ride the most powerful and technically advanced motorcycles of all time, literally destroying the competition, which were in a different, lesser league: MV Augusta.
Valentino Rossi is/was not too shabby, either. Even on lesser equipment. _________________ Sub-Optimal Hillbilly Jazz |
