|
|
Hi all,
I've been diagnosed with a Zenker's Diverticulum, a small pouch in my throat below my airway that makes swallowing difficult. Surgery is required for a permanent solution via a small external incision. My surgeon is recommending a ONE MONTH post operative recovery with NO trumpet playing. Ouch.
My question: anybody out there have any experience or advice with this, especially the length of recovery time required?
Thanks. Feel free to PM me.

One month isn't too bad, assuming you don't make your living playing. I'm currently on a 6-month hiatus due to a front tooth extraction and bone/tissue grafting.
Assuming you haven't already had the surgery I'd be inclined to play for the surgeon and let them evaluate your particular amount of strain and see if that raises or lowers their concern.
When I have my dental CT scan next week I'm planning on taking a mouthpiece and maybe my horn to show the periodontist what I experience when playing. I'm thinking it might inform how he proceeds when it's time to install the implant.
Welcome to the TH, and best of luck with your procedure. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I don't intend this to be critical, but I don't know why you are even asking the question. Do exactly what your doctor says. An internet forum isn't exactly overflowing with medical experts on your precise situation.
I had throat surgery and never got far from my doctor's advice. I would periodically have him check on my progress and not take things into my own hands.
I had to take a one-year's medical leave once. Sucked but you'll survive. Good luck! _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird
