hi guys. Today I realized that the old "crappy trumpet" that i had as an extra is an olds ambassador... I couldn't really tell at first because it is unlaquered... I'm not sure where I got the horn and I can't even read the serial number. But I've been playing it a lot lately and it does give me a nice sound. I specially like it for my jazz solo stuff because it gives a nice dark sound..
Anyway.. I would like to know more about the Olds Ambassadors and what kind of horns they are. Thanks for any help. _________________ Jorge Ayala Jr: Trumpeter/Producer

Around 1960, I believe. (I checked Lars Kirmser's list...) |

That would be 1949, the 3rd year of production of the Ambassador. It's probably a gem, and I would hang onto it. I have a 1950 that's sheer dynamite.

Rich - he stated a 6 figure serial # beginning with 3, not a 5 figure one. 1960 seems to be correct. _________________

The post 1952 S/N list is here:

Sounds like the horn was probably made in 1960 or 1961. Cool find ... with all the stuff I have, how come I never seem to come across stuff like that?

Another tipoff for Olds is the factory, engraved on the bell. Los Angeles horns are older, Fullertons are newer.

I've got an ambassador circa 1956. valves never stick, hasn't been cleaned for years during storage, yet plays great. Feels a lot heavier and thicker than horns of todays era. |

just a few months ago i "discovered" we have an olds ambassador cornet. I know it's from the early 70's so it might not be quite as much of a "gem" but it's still a pretty good horn. I'd use it if I ever had a playing situation for a cornet. |

I love my olds ambassador, it is a fullerton model. I still occasionaly use my getzen but not often. My olds, some of you may remember it from back in may. It was the messed up one First Class Brass fixed up. It's beuatiful, they did a great job restoring it. If I ever have/want to get another horn restored i would not hesitate to contact them. I'm sure there are good people in the U.S but they did such a wonderful job. Every day I play it, i start to love it more.

Merf - would you mind saying what the restoration of your Ambassador cost you and what work needed to be done on it? Was the postage reasonable? England seems a long way off to send an instrument from the States for repair, but in today's shrinking world maybe thinking globally is not such a bad idea if the results are superior. _________________

the restoration was free, first class brass offered to restore it if someone bought it. shipping was about $50 each way. the valves were good but the bell was pretty bad, the lead pipe was bent to. the results were outstanding. if it would help i can try to email some pictures. just provide an email address.
