|

I'm very interested in the teachings of Arnold Jacobs and I've familiarized myself with the very tip of the iceberg through some searching in the last few days. Problem is all the information is scattered, anacdotal or 2nd hand (at best).
If I had the knowledge I would do it myself, but would it be possible to create a a sticky thread listing the best available resources, threads, or methods to get started exploring the philophy? |

There are several books available about Arnold Jacob's teaching with moving portraits from colleagues and former students, all of which are valuable and important resources. However as musicians, I feel that any opportunity we have to hear a master teacher is a far better way to learn new concepts.
If you really want to learn about the Chicago School, you really need to have to two Arnold Jacobs CDs from Summit, Portrait of an Artist, and Legacy of an Artist, which contain a nice mix of clips from Jacobs masterclasses, solo performances, and vintage CSO Brass Quintet recordings and performances. Hearing Jacob's voice is truly a time capsule of another era with his unique accent and choice of words and phrases. He has a calming yet motivating effect that only comes with age and wisdom. Are there any master teachers and pedagogues like him out there today?
Both CDs are available on Amazon.com

Thanks for the info - I'm going to order those CDs and look up that YouTube recording and the other related YouTube recordings.
Cheers,

A couple of books that are interesting in describing the man and his method are:
Arnold Jacobs: Song and Wind by Brian Frederiksen
Arnold Jacobs: The Legacy of a Master by M. Dee Stewart
Brian also has a website: www.windsongpress.com that has books and lots of other material. Brian is a great guy!
I also suggest The Breathing Gym by Patrick Sheridan and Sam Pilafian -- book and DVD.
