I’m getting a bit crazy...
I’m trying to buy a flugelhorn, a vintage one.
Budget 600-800$

I’m getting confused... too many brands.
Selmer, olds, Curtois, couesnon...

What would you buy?

This:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/reynolds-emperor-flugelhorn/153268253189?hash=item23af7ff205:g:660AAOSwnJtb8ySa:rk:30:pf:0

I bought one this year for $350 or so, but spent $1700 to have Charlie Melk make it like new (it was in rough shape -- I probably should have paid even less). It plays very nicely.

The one currently listed on eBay looks like it might be usable as-is. If not, the eBay "Money Back Guarantee" offers pretty good protection. Plus, Charlie Melk offers a mouthpipe for this horn that will generally improve its playing characteristics.

(DISCLAIMER: I have no connection with this auction or the seller.)

It looks a lot like an Olds that I played for many years. It was a good horn but I fell for the Couesnon mystique. I believe that OLds and Reynolds were made in the same factory and this horn could well be a restamped version of the Olds.

The Reynolds from that era was indeed a version of the Olds L-12, except for the fact that the Reynolds had a yellow brass bell while the Olds used a "Re-O-Loy" bell which was more of a red brass. The Reynolds was produced in Abilene, Texas for a while, but later production was shifted to the Olds plant in Fullerton, California.

I own a Couesnon too (also restored by Melk), but the Reynolds holds its own against it, in my opinion (particularly when equipped with the Melk mouthpipe).

Issue with this is that is located in the USA.
I would prefer to buy something in europe.

Do you have some ideas on which brands/models are a good choice?

I'm looking for something with a dark smooth sound

Any decent flugelhorn can produce a dark smooth sound. All the companies you've mentioned qualify. The differences in the sounds of decent flugelhorns isn't night and day, the differences are more subtle. There is no universally accepted "best" flugelhorn.

Clark Terry played many different brands/models of flugelhorns. He sounded great on all of them. If you buy a reputable brand in decent condition you'll be fine, it will sound like a flugelhorn. If you want to adjust the sound just change the mouthpiece.

Or how about this, right from the Trumpet Herald marketplace:

https://www.trumpetherald.com/marketplace.php?task=detail&id=110512&s=Mahillon-Flugelhorn

I own a Mahillon, and if you can find one that is in good shape, it will be a good choice. (Even the cheapest models play well, but you might want to avoid the ones that don't have monel or nickel-plated valves.)

Interesting, I'm finding many of them. A nice alternative.

I bought a Couesnon monopole flugelhorn with trigger and melk lead pipe on eBay $850. I can't imagine ever buying another. It's not the prettiest girl at the dance but the sound is the one, if you know what I mean. If you are patient I don't think they have gone up in price.
