Looking for an alternative to the 5 c. Bach. If there already is a thread on this point me to it. Having problems navigating the search.
Stork equivalent or others. Even a tad bit shallower.
Thank you

Hello,
Check out the Warburton site. I play the 5 series which I think is close. MC or MD cup possibly. _________________ Christian K. Peters

The Warburton 5 in my experience is not very close to a Bach 5C, different size and rim. If you want an upgrade in sound and comfrot i suggest Curry 5C, similar (but better) rim and overall better sound palette. _________________ ------------------------

The Stork 4C ID is 16.5, the same as the Bach 5C, but the outer rim is thinner and had more of a bite and felt less comfortable to me than my 5C. _________________ GeorgeB

What's the aim here?
Do you want similar size (ID & cup depth/shape) with a different kind of rim?
Do you want a particular change in sound (more zing/sparkle for example)?
Do you want something reproducible? (Is: Bach's of different eras famously vary - if you can't find a match for a damaged one, you maybe looking for something that'll be available near enough identical in futirs)
Etc? |

The Curry 5M might fit your needs for a shallower 5C cup. |

Hello all,
Mark was asking for an alternative. The 5C and the Warburton 5, are both listed as 16.5 diameters. Yes, if you got to the Kanstul comparison resource, the rims are not the same. Though I did find that the Schilke 14C2 had almost the same contour...If one were to accept the contours as gospel. Personally, I use that resource as a starting place, as I have found that the visual representation doesn't pan out as good as how the piece feels on my face. "Alternatives," are given to add aspects that are missing from the original appliance, whether it be flexibility, tone or comfort. _________________ Christian K. Peters

My experience has been that asking for a similar piece (assuming that is one's aim), is a good starting place, but in the long run there's no substitute for actually playing a mouthpiece. You may find a similar substitute or you may be surprised altogether by something more different, altogether. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

The thinner outer rim makes it look and feel larger than the 5C. _________________ GeorgeB

I’m a 5c-ish player. Some pieces I’ve tried in that range:
Curry 5bc, 5c, 5m. I prefer them in the Bach blank. I found the 5m needs a larger throat. Maybe the best Bach-ish alternative.
Stork 4/5. The 4 feels slightly bigger than a Bach 5c and the rim isn’t comfortable for me. The Stork 5 might be closer to the Bach. The Stork 5b is a well balanced piece. Don’t let the depth put you off. The Stork 5c is easy to play in the practice room but I found it sounded too restrictive when I played it with other people. I can’t play the Stork 5d for some reason. The Stork 5 rims are somewhat thin. That makes them pretty flexible but can be uncomfortable if you have thin-ish lips.
Yamaha 14c4. Somewhere between a Bach 3c and 5c. Sparkling sound. Comfy.
Laskey 60MC, 60C, 60B. All are nice and easy for me to switch between depending on the sound I need to get. The MC is like a 3c-ish depth (slightly shallower). The 60C is a nice C depth. The 60B is like a 5B. Have a listen to the Brass Chat with Mr Laskey. He describes where his rim comes from.
Warburton 5. Felt smaller to me than a Bach 5c. Lots of people play them but I didn’t stick with them for long.
James New 4s rims. Various depths. Very nice pieces. If you like the feel of a 3c rim but the diameter of a 5c these are a good alternative.
Hope this helps. |

Just looking for a little more comfort. And a little help up top. I like the megatone and have a large letter 5c. Just gets sharp at times.
I've been all over Mpcs, played on a Wedge for a long time , then stopped playing for a little over a year.
Started back with a 5 c , because that's where I was at before the wedge.
Seems I lost my sound and technical skill with the wedge. Frustrated me bad. Enough to stop. At one point I loved it but seems things went down hill after a while So I feel good on a 5 size. Just trying to get more comfort,
Thanks for all the help

Exactly the reasons to look for a Hammond 5Mb....high range is easier, a bit more open with the slightly larger backbore for the upper register to sing. My students who play in the 5C/3C range love the Hammond rims. _________________ Dr. Albert L. Lilly, III DM

First I would try another Bach 5C. The big letter Bach 5Cs I have are all too deep, there's even a Youtube review of one with the same problem. It should help a lot if you get a good one, I always go for the "Vincent Bach Corp." versions, a bit older but they've given me the best results. You could also try a slightly larger throat (26-25).
I'm all about the 5 size and here's what I've experienced.
Stork 4C26B, 4D26B: the rims on these are wider (stated in their description on their online store) than other Storks but the bite and feel is practically the same as a Bach 5C, these are my favorite for C trumpet, they're bright and colorful, the Studio Master 6 rim is equivalent to Vacchiano 4 rim
Curry 5C: great overall but sounds a little different from Bach, I use a 5DE for Bb commercial and I have a 5BC which is great
Greg Black 5C: again sounds different than Bach but more consistent from top to bottom, maybe a little darker, rim is more round
Denis Wick 4B: sounds like the Curry but has a fat cushy rim
I actually liked the 6 size with Warburton especially with an MC cup and 8 backbore but I only tried it in a shop. I tried a Schilke 13C4 expecting it to be similar but it's blatty and bright because of the V shaped cup. I used to use a GR 65VC for C trumpet but I switched to Stork because GRs have, to me, a kind of throaty sound that is nice in a hall but weird up close. I plan on trying Pickett 6C & 6BC, Hammond 6ML, Frost O6MVD, and Denis Wick American 5C all at some point.
Other 5C-esque mouthpieces that I am aware of but haven't tried include ACB 5C & Fabrication 5, Laskey 60C, Kanstul 5C & BMV5C, Schilke Symphony M5C, Giddings 5M149, Stomvi 5C, etc.
