What is particularly galling is knowing that, as I fade into the sunset, this will become standard usage for the masses. And it doesn’t matter what I think.
The other galling point is that I am becoming one of those people I thought were too anal when I was younger.
So... |
Do not worry. Their turn will come, too. |

Now there is a truly comforting thought. |

I've noticed on radio interviews, people have started answering questions with the word, "so." I think it may be a more modern version of how we used to answer questions by saying, "well..." _________________ Burbank Benge Bb MLP

Maybe it is because the person starting the conversation wants to be dominant? _________________ King Super 20 Trumpet; Sov 921 Cornet

The reason it can be bothersome is that it is so often used as a conjunction, so one feels like they have missed part of a thought process and may wonder what came before the "so"?? But I have done it on occasion and it has caused confusion, so I try not to do it, and yet it can be a difficult habit to break. |

So's law is a thing. Start a rebuttal post with "so what you're really saying is ..."
And most likely that is NOT what they're saying. Listening is a lost art *sigh* |

What I hate is a response starting with "unfortunately," when they fully intend to say no. If the answer is no - then say no. |

So, this is the language gripe forum, right?! (interrobang!!)
My latest pet peeve - "moving forward." A verbal tic which irks in its ubiquity and virtual meaninglessness.
And, there are two words one should never use. One is swell, the other is lousy. I'll tell you what they are later. |

Good one, Ayryq! As many I Love Lucys as I've seen, I didn't remember this great clip. I think I got that joke from some humor compilation in the 60s. That's 1960s, not my 60s! |

Bothers me too. People simply do not know their own language.
I see errors in news headlines on a daily basis, and glaringly obvious ones, not just the ubiquitous and incompetent use of the apostrophe. Where are the proofreaders?
And then people say things like 'don't sweat the small stuff'. As if the decline in the teaching of spelling and arithmetic is a small thing. Sure. Anyway, if it gets much worse I'm moving to Africa. |
