During the past 6 years I have comeback-went away-come back several times. The situation I encountered with doing the Caruso Intervals was hitting the wall after just a few minutes. Lack of range and strength really becomes obvious doing the Caruso Intervals.
A Caruso student from Texas suggested starting on low C. That really helped the first time after a 12 year layoff.
This last time I tried the expanding up and down Bill Adam approach. It keeps the horn on your face for a longer set without topping out at my yet to arrive range. All the rules are the same.
Yesterday I did 4ths Regular and hit the wall at high F after 3 sets. That was a breakthrough for me. I would limit this approach to comeback players.
I hope Mr. Caruso will be kind to me for doing this!!!

You mean Bill Adam (no "s")?
I started doing a variation of this a while back but had forgotten about it. I do wonder at the lack of any beal through the exercise, though it should indeed be an endurance builder that way (I am back again after a few months and discovering that my range is mostly there but I've no endurance to get through a two-hour rehearsal on the lead part).
I did (and will again now you've reminded me) it in half notes with a return to "center". The pattern was thus e.g.
G - A - G - rest -G - F - G- rest - G - B - G- rest - etc.
Also one with a little more movement:
G - A - G - F - G - rest - G - B - G - E - G- rest - etc.
A number of teachers use expanding scales. I think Rich Willey posted some Reinhardt exercises that return to center so I may have copied from there.
No idea what CC would say about it... I have no direct contact, only what my teacher told me from his visit to see him, and of course the wealth of info here on TH. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

The whole notes are just there to keep track of the starting notes. All Caruso rules apply:
2nds Reg: G half note-A half Note -G whole note -whole rest with mouthpiece on lips. Then FGF-ABA-EFE-etc. _________________ Schilke B5

Didn’t Caruso call this exercise Spiders? Didn’t he suggest doing it chromatically starting with quarter notes and then as eighth notes? It doesn’t seem like 2nds, etc., at all to me. _________________ Kevin |

Different exercise. gstump is basically doing 6 notes as a spidering drill. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

I will write it out later tonight. It is 2nds reg. Mr Caruso never used the term spider with me back in 1967 but I like it. Spider 2nds Regular. _________________ Schilke B5

I used this for a few days. Could be good for young beginners. Strong medicine!

Hey Gordon,
I like the idea of those seconds. I remember feeling like Carmine was trying to keep me from letting go and opening up in the low register. Two things: he spoke of playing up the scale and playing down the scale rather than playing up the scale and then letting go to descend. Also, we did two-way 4-octave scales starting on double pedal C and also starting from double C. His instructions were to never breathe in the staff so the setting for high and low would be the same.
It seems to me your seconds idea would help accomplish that goal.
