Hello fellow come-backers. I had to lay off trumpet playing for a year due to health concerns, but I am back at it now. My daily drill is the same as what has served me well in the past: long-tone scales, Arban's exercises, and etudes or songs selected to help me with accuracy and phrasing. Things seem to be going well enough and should continue to do so as long as I can resist the temptation to overdo. Community band starts back up in a couple weeks. I should be ready. |

There is truth in this. Whenever I stop playing (for nearly 40 years at one point), I end up coming back! |

Absolutely. Once you get the bug it just draws you back in. I quit trumpet from high school till about my mid twenties, played for a couple of years and then circumstances took me away from it. When I got a chance again in my early thirties I jumped back and have never stopped (that's been quite a few years), though I was a little lackadaisical for a long time. The instrument I keep stopping but always coming back to is banjo! It has a lot lower physical barriers to reentry, though it is hard to be very good on it. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Yeah, Jazzsoul and cgaiii, I have to agree with you about music being a love affair. And for me, it apparently must involve trumpet playing. I have a nice acoustic guitar that I dabble with now and then, but playing it doesn't provide me with the same sense of satisfaction that I get with my trumpet. I am looking forward to community band rehearsal next Tuesday evening! |

Yes, somehow, as fun as it is to play banjo or guitar, it is not as fulfilling as trumpet to me, but I am sure there is a whole large trumpet orchestra here in which everyone feels the same way. I'm sure there are others who feel that way about the guitar and banjo.
Hmm, my wife's community band starts up again next Tuesday too. I have not joined because every time I listen to them I feel there are way too many trumpets, but it would be fun. Enjoy. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Oh, no, never too many trumpets in a community band! Flutes, on the other hand -- well, we had about 30 this past summer. (only about 10 trumpets) |

Oh you would be surprised, especially when some don't know how to control their volume or the appropriate "voicing" for the music.
30 flutes is amazing. Must be a bigger area than around here. Here they really struggle to have enough flutes and clarinets. Maybe your flutes should form a band all of their own -- you could have bass flutes, piccolos, etc. I once saw a saxophone symphony in Japan. All the parts were played by saxes, about 80 of them. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS, Yamaha YTR-6335S

There are plenty of trumpets in my community band too. But members travel now and then, or have some other conflict that prevents them from participating in a rehearsal or concert. I encourage you to not worry about “too many trumpets” and enjoy your community band experience. |

Our local community band restarted this past Tuesday. We have around 20 trumpets, and are constantly told to keep our bells down and play into the stand, lol. Also have a 'legion' of flutes, ~20. |

I have to say that I am amazed by the size of these community bands. I am really glad the tradition so alive and well. I keep thinking about joining, but there are some serious obstacles to get over in the trumpet section. Thanks for the encouragement. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS, Yamaha YTR-6335S
