Does anybody know if the Courtois Model 313EVI Evolution Trumpet is a good trumpet. I am planning on buying one on sale for $1999.99 and would like to know if it is a good trumpet to play in both symphonic and jazz styles. Any info would be helpful. Thanks a lot |

I play a Courtios Evolution I for jazz and legit work. It's a great instrument and lets me truly express my feelings very easily. They aren't exactly the best horns for playing in the extreme register but it does play everywhere else with ease and a great sound. _________________ Andrew Fowler

Thanks a lot but would you suggest I buy it. I can play up to E above high C on good days and up to a high C everyday. Will the trumpet hinder my ability to hit those notes on it. Right now I'm still playing on my beginner Bach from 6 years. Thanks again. |

Is the tone quality really good? And does it feel smooth to play? By smooth, I mean does it seem to play every note you want it to without you focusing too much on it like you have to on some other trumpets? Thanks |

It's a nice horn, but nearly impossible to be lyrical with. It's too heavy and stuffy for my taste. For 2 grand, go with a Schilke. _________________ 2003 All-State Musician |

The Evolution is a very unusual horn. Some people love it, BUT I wouldn't recommend buying one until you've played it because it's such a big change from what you're probably used to.
I surely not my cup of tea, but that doesn't mean it's not a good horn, just try it before you buy.

How can people possibly know what will work for you?
If it sings with you playing it, go for it!
Oh - for all the people answering the Courtois or Schilke thread - you are posting in the wrong place, check out the other thread for posting your recommendations. In this one Mr/Mrs?Miss Krafty was just enquiring about the Courtois.
Just because an instrument works for one person, doesn't mean it will for everybody else.
If it is at all possible, try the Courtois out, preferably in the situations where you will be playing it. If the instrument works with you on the end of it, go for it! If not, then maybe you should consider some other makes.
Just my thoughts - and this is only being posted once, unlike all the Schilke fans here who seem to seen some repeat marks somewhere |

Your profile does not say where you are located, but for $2000 or less in the US, you can buy many different good horns. It is a fairly wide open list.

Having owned three Schilkes ( X3, B1 and B?) I would like to say buy a Courtois Evo One.
I played and owned two of them and they have the most beautiful sound on earth.
Better sound than a Schilke ( which are responsive horns without much sound), a Taylor, Bach or anything else I played in my long life as a trumpet junkie.
If you think that sound is important get that horn.
It plays VERY lyrical, warm and gentle.
If you step on the gas, all the thin walled Schilkes and other liteweight diet horns wonīt be heard at all. I SWEAR !
You cannot overblow this horn.
I played this trumpet in a Big Band ( Thad Jones stuff).
Yeah !
It is centered and easy to play, too.
Donīt believe what people say who played two horns in their whole life.
Also, you can change the gap of the receiver to alter the response and sound of the horn. |

I'm sure the Evo is a fine horn...but I gotta disagree with the "if you step on the gas the schilke won't be heard at all" comment. First of all the trumpet-as-car analogy is flawed. Second, having played schilkes for ever, they can be great lead horns--I played one in salsa orchestras and it cut through just fine. And I've heard many others do it as well. One odd effect of the schilke (in the case a B1) is that it seems louder and more piercing from a distance--I have tested this effect with another schilke player and it really is true.
Two grand will buy you any number of excellent horns...but you should know what you want. |

Which ever horn you decide on spend some time (and maybe even repeat visits) playing it. I was at a music store last week and spent sometime playing the Courtois Ev II and this one was very good - much better then the one I had played a few weeks earlier. However, if you are going to spend that kind of money for a horn there are a lot better choices. Schilke would be an excellent choice. There are a variety of models from the B series to the S series to the X series. I do not know what skill level you are or what type of music you play so, if decide on a Schilke you will have to play the different models. If you play a lot of different music - including concert Band then the B1 or B5 might be good choices. There are a lot of professional players that play the B5. If you want a slightly smaller bore then the B6 (Bill Chase played this model) or the S42 (the choice of Roger Ingram and Jon Faddis) might be a good choice. If you want something a little larger then the X3 might be your cup of tea. The X3 is the horn that Leblanc based their Arturo Sandoval model on. In fact he was playing it instead of the Leblanc when he was in Atlanta last year. Before that he played the B1. Schilke can blend or soar over a band. It depends on what your playing needs are.
Other horns you might try are: the Callet Jazz, the Wild Thing, Yamaha's Xeno and Bobby Shews Z horn. Selmers new horn - I believe it is the TT model is getting great reviews. The new Conn Vintage one is a fine horn as well.
There are a lot of choices out there. I think the Evo. II is a good horn but is expensive and limiting on its versatility. Look around. Don't get caught up in buying something unusual. Buy something (new or used) because it plays great and fits YOUR NEEDS. That is all that is important. Good Luck!

Sorry to say this, but thats a huge load of $*&@ It's a very lyrical horn the sound is beautiful and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one, were I looking. I DO reccomend you try the horn, if you like it then get it. Is it worth two grand, if you like it yes. I know my Evolution one was worth every penny. _________________ Andrew Fowler
