(Note: I'm posting here because I'm not sure what "school" would be appropriate. I've been working on my own from Claude Gordon, but my college teacher was a Bill Adam student, and it seems like a few of the teachers in the area might fall under "Chicago School.")
I live in Buchanan MI, about 30min from South Bend IN, 30min from St. Joseph MI, 2 hours from Chicago or Grand Rapids, 75min from Kalamazoo. I play well enough, and I'm busy with local/community orchestra and big band playing, but I'm thinking continued improvement would benefit from time with experienced teacher. I play plenty of jazz but it is not critical that a teacher be a jazz player. I'm interested in the usual things: Efficiency, sound, endurance, range...
I started by looking at who teaches at nearby colleges and who plays in nearby symphony orchestras, but I'm discovering these folks are typically not from around here: indeed, the principal trumpeter with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra lives in New Orleans! Here's some people I've found with preliminary notes:
Daniel McCarthy - adjunct at Lake Michigan College, Notre Dame, Andrews University. From Governors State University (which has no current music program?) https://music.nd.edu/people/faculty/daniel-mccarthy/
South Bend SO members:
Stephen Orejudos, Principal - lives in New Orleans
James (Jim?) Carter
Christian Anderson - lives in Chicago https://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=8680
Southwest Michigan SO members:
Rich Neckermann, Principal - lives in Kalamazoo?
Dan Price - lives in Chicago http://danpricetrumpet.com/
Keith Geiman - lives in Kalamazoo? - also Battle Creek SO, teaches at Kalamazoo College
If I'm going to drive all the way to Kalamazoo...
Scott Thornburg, Robert White (WMU)
Kalamazoo Symphony
Scott Thornburg - Principal
Mike Brozick - from Chicago
Pamela Smitter http://www.pamelasmitter.com/ Grand Rapids? DMA MSU
Goshen College
Akira Murotani - lives Fort Wayne
There's also a local guy I've played with, James Nufer, who mostly teaches kids but he has the 3rd spot at Lansing SO. He went to U of W-Milwaukee (Kevin Hartman, who studied with Cichowicz) and Lawrence U. So he might be worth a shot.
Can anyone recommend any of these as teachers? Thanks _________________ Yamaha YTR6345HGS Bb

I have not studied with Scott Thornburg, but he is a fantastic trumpet player with many years of experience as a teacher. I'd suggest giving him a try. |

I heard back from Scott Thornburg:
Quote: | I'm sorry to say that I am not in a position to take on any more students at this time. Due to the demands of my performance schedule and the need to focus my teaching on my university studio, I have had cut back on teaching outside of my university responsibilities. |
However, he did offer to forward any suggestions he might know of; I await that reply. Dr. Robert White is also at Western Michigan and was only my second planned contact because he listed Scott Thornburg among his teachers. I figured I'd start by going "to the source."
My college professor also studied with Bill Adam so I'd likely be familiar with his pedagogy. _________________ Yamaha YTR6345HGS Bb

I've scheduled a lesson with him next week. (Late spring is not the best time for two musicians to try to find a time to meet!)
Thanks for the recommendation. _________________ Yamaha YTR6345HGS Bb

I had a great session with Dr. White yesterday - I love the way he makes everything come back to sound and music (rather than technique and mechanics)... beautiful above all.
He also challenged me to record myself more (and listen to the recordings!)
Since this was a one-time lesson, he gave me a few more names to seek out, all in the Kalamazoo area:
David Bernard
Rich Neckermann
Benje Daneman
