I have a lacquered C trumpet tuning slide that I'm getting ready to list on eBay but I wanted to clean it up a little first. I've had good results soaking my silver-plated slides in white vinegar to get the green stuff out, but I'm concerned that the vinegar could damage the lacquer. What think ye? _________________ Bryan Fields

Depends on the lacquer and how long you intend on soaking it for. Should be okay, but maybe 50:50 Water:Vinegar to start if you're really worried. |

Probably not more than 20-30 minutes--that's all it's taken to get my other slides clean, and this one is not as gunky as my regular horns because it wasn't used very often.
Will the vinegar damage the water key cork? _________________ Bryan Fields

I don’t think it will damage the cork, but that is just a guess.
As far as soaking the slides you could plug one end and fill the slide with vinegar. That way the lacquer will at most have vinegar on the for a few moments. |

Vinegar is a mild acid. Lacquer finishes will withstand it well. What you should be concerned about is that brass can be effected - especially if there are tiny holes in the finish, it gets underneath, and remains there. _________________ Ron Berndt
