Someone uses Bach 3? They say it's hard to play. |

It's not the mouthpiece, it's the trumpet that's hard to play.
And deep mouthpieces on a trumpet are all demanding for your embouchure. |

I have a NY Bach 3 that I used in graduate school, 1978-1980. Great mouthpiece until I started playing in a big band years later. Still use it with my C trumpet. |

It’s a very deep dark mouthpiece. Not uncommon for rotary trumpet. Chris Botti plays a straight 3 as a jazz soloist and sounds wonderful. I’ve had one and it was too dark and deep for me, even though I favor slightly deeper and more open blowing mouthpieces. It completely depends on the player. _________________ Jason Rahn

It also depends on the instrument you stick it in. The Botti horn is a large bore Martin and already leans dark. |

I wouldn't call it a deep cupped mouthpiece. I would call it a neutral mouthpiece. Neither deep or shallow, but right in the middle. But really, it is still just a Bach. Nothing magical there. The world is large and there are many fine mouthpiece makers to fulfill your desires for better and just the right tool for the job. _________________ Richard

It is one the deepest mouthpieces that Bach makes.
2, 5A and 7A are slightly deeper. But they're all very deep.
I use a Bach 3 for my cornet and it is a great match.
For trumpet it is very deep and similar shape to some German/Austrian mouthpiece cups.
The mouthpiece is quite close to a Yamaha 14E4, but different throat and backbore.
I have a Bach 3 with 25 throat and 87 backbore and it is very similar to the Yamaha 14E4. |

Though a Bach straight 3 is slightly shallower than an A cup, it is still a very deep cup with little chop support. That works great for a few players, but not most. Respectfully, I would certainly not call it neutral. There are bigger and deeper mouthpieces, but it is still very big. _________________ Jason Rahn

I apologize for coming from a land of very deep cups. You are all right. It is quite deep. I just did the Kanstul Comparator and the Bach 3 is between a Wick D and XD cup. Very deep.
I forget that I don't ever play C cups or anything shallower. For me, everything works better with deeper and more open mouthpieces. At least a B cup for me so my perspective is skewed. I have Bach 3 for trumpet and cornet and I found them to be middle of the road in sound and response. Mainly they felt too small in bore. YMMV obviously.
Best wishes all. _________________ Richard

I started playing a Bach 3 (from the late 60's / Corp no dot) about a year ago for small group club Jazz. Man I love it. You can whisper in this thing or play out and it still keeps that beautiful tone without getting too bright. When I first started using it I only used it for Jazz, but the more I play it the stronger I seem to be getting with it. Surely NOT a lead mpc, but I have no problem playing strong and fat up to say a D or E with it for solo's if I'm not too tired. Best of all I don't bottom out in it as I tire (that's for sure). My face tells me when I'm tired and when I need to bring the horn down. yeah , the more I play it the more it seems to help me build chops, and the more I am enjoying it. Then again I am talking small group Jazz in clubs / restaurants / etc where we can't blow the doors down or we'll loose the gig.
Surely not for me for Big Band or LEAD work with a large band.
But like anything it didn't happen overnight. Took me a few months to get to where I am now with it. I played it a little bit each day until I stated to feel comfortable with it. Now I use it for 80% of my gigs . The way I like to describe it is it gives me a FAT trumpet sound. I like that. |

Years ago I used a Bach 3 cornet for a British Brass Band. I also had a trumpet 3 and used it when I was playing 3rd trumpet in an opera orchestra on a Bach 43L Bb (La Boheme). It was perfect for the job. Between the deep cup and large bore, it was very taxing in a brass ensemble. I moved on to other things many times. |

I use a Carol Brass Legend 7760L RML that I kind of modified a bit. Removed the braces and stripped the red brass bell to raw brass. Works wonderful with the Bach 3.
Then I use a Carol Brass balanced 8060H with a Monette B4D for other work that I do. Similar to a Bach 1 1/2 B . That combination is more lively and brighter and I use that when I work with a larger group and need to cut through the "noise". (hehe). But for small group Jazz...…. I sure enjoy the Bach 3 and CB Jazz horn. |
