Anyone using or have tried a B&S challenger 3116 Eb/D not the Malcolm Mcnab "exquisite"? Thoughts compared to Yamaha and Schilke? _________________ "You need F-15's..." Joe Biden |

Having previously had a couple of Yamahas and a Bach, I have settled on B&S as my weapon of choice. With regard to Ebs, the McNab is still in production but only comes in Eb flavour with no D Bell and is also quite a small bore and a lightweight bell. I think the target audience for this trumpet is rather small. I have both the 3116 and 3117 Ebs and both are superb. The 3116 is quite light and delicate, ideal for classical music - as in the historical era rather than a general term for anything with a violin in it. It definitely deserves its place in my bag but has been somewhat ignored since I got my 3117 which is a completely different animal. It has a huge bore, a very heavy gauge bell and is great for playing high parts that you want to still sound like a regular Bb. I’m still smiling from playing it in the Easter service in Chichester Cathedral and hearing its sound reverberating around the cathedral for nearly 10 seconds - it sounded epic.
I’m not saying B&S are the best out there. They are the best for me, I’ll never swap. I do however suggest you try one.
Good luck on your search. _________________ There are no chords that can't be improved by adding a double high C!

If you do want an Eb/D, the Yamaha 9610 is also great. I have always liked the higher horns in the Yamaha family. |
I love mine, very much a solo instrument....great live sound |

Thanks for sharing... ended up with a B&S Eb/D, which I'm happy with. _________________ "You need F-15's..." Joe Biden |
