In my school jazz band right now we are doing several charts that require shakes. Being a classical player i dont have much experience with those. Ive been told just to shake the horn, but that doesnt work for me. Any ideas on how to help? ( Oh by the way the shake is on a high C if that makes a difference. ) Thanks. |

yes it does...use 23 fingers to make the shake easier...
the shake is basically a BIG hand vibrato....roll the tongue slightly forward to be able to sharp the note [pitch wise] a little then with your hand [keep the 23 fingering]....make the first movement towards you [not too much] the extra little pressure should break the note to a D [23] then back a little bit...that's it...take care to NOT over exaggerate this motion....of course if your aperture is TOO open this and lip trills will be difficult.
I suggest you try this exercise first on an F# 123 top line of the stave/staff.
aperture test...

is that really what a shake is?
My old lesson teacher was teaching me there should be minimal horn action and more from the mouth, sort of a reptitious AWW-EEEE-AWW-EEEE movement of the tongue.
I know to some that is a lip trill but if you back off the trill before the actual notes change you should shake.
I still haven't mastered this at all...matter of fact, I suck at it! |

There are several different methods to this madness. Most of the time I do just as Roddy-O suggests and roll the tongue forward, using an alternate fingering that allows the pitch to break to the next partial a bit easier and then I "shake" the horn by pushing in and releasing the preasure. I think Maynard uses a real lip trill when he does them but I don't have that kind of speed or control yet so I just do the shake. _________________ Patrick Gleason

I find that literally shaking the horn back and forth really doesn't do the trick. instead, i use a combination of lip compression (small, fast compression/relaxation to get the note to move up and down) and syllables (aww-eee aww-eee REALLY fast). It does take quite a bit of practice though. Try whistling a "shake" - it gives you somewhat of the same feeling required on the trumpet. Just use the syllables mentioned above. Good luck! |

Try really exagerating your vibrato on a g above the staff fingered 13 after you get it on that do the chromatic fingering pattern and continue so on. _________________ Andrew Fowler

when you guys say "roll the tongue forward" you don't mean that you are flutter tonguing do you? I can't see where that would help.
What exactly do you mean by roll the tongue forward.
My best shakes actually occur on the fluglehorn. At least that is where I come closest to a shake. |

Roddy explained the shake very well. There is also a simple lip trill which is starting slowly and then increasing speed. Arturo does some pretty freaky lip trills in his solos. heehee |
