My wife asked me to make a double trumpet/cornet stand for her Conn Constellation cornet and her new trumpet. I grabbed a bach 1 1/4 C and gave it a blow. Holy molly what a sound. It is not the purest cornet sound but.....holly molly. It is a symphonic type sound that would work in almost any concert band(not a British brass band) or orchestra setting.
And the workmanship on her pristine Conn is beautiful. I got it for her a few years ago after hocking her beloved Conn 28a for a Getzen Eterna. I posted that story here years ago.

" It is a symphonic type sound ..."
Well the Bach 1 1/4 C produces an excellent symphonic sound.
You can get closer to a "cornet" sound with a different mouthpiece.
It becomes challenging with the large bore Conn cornets - .485 bore - since deeper cups and larger throat sizes can be pretty tiring for most of us to play with such open cornets.
"lipshurt" has this pretty well worked out for the Conns

Well she bought her first conn 28A in 1962 when she was in 8th grade. Saved baby sitting money at $.50 per hour. And she sounded great with no problem filling up the cornet. It is very playable. I also played it on a 3C & 5C.
Here is a recording of my wife playing 1st Cornet with the School Band of America in Germany in "66. Eisenhower sent them to help relations..

Quite a schoolgirl that wife of yours! Nice sounding Bugler´s!! Very nice to be precice!
As for the Bach 1 1/4C I used such a one, playing front row cornet (Getzen Eterna) in my brassband 1970 - late nineties. Big sound, could be played "cornettishly" - however ´cause everyone else losing themselves in the Wick swamp I had to find something less "symphonic"......
And I played lead on the trumpet variant. Big sound oh yes . Playable - indeed. _________________ Cornets: mp 143D3/ DW Ultra 1,5 C
