I own a bunch of practice mutes, including an older Yamaha Silent Brass and all are pretty good. But I came across one that I like a lot, and just discovered why.
It's the Pampet practice mute that can be had on Amazon for about $20. I had seen this mute at one of my student's homes. It looked strange and when I picked it up it felt a bit flimsy. I had to try it. And when I did I was impressed. It seemed to have a better feel and flow than other practice mutes, and for $20 I thought it worth a shot. With Amazon Prime returns are easy.
It's not the dead quietest practice mute. I think Best Brass owns that title, but the Pampet is pretty quiet. But here's why I like it. That "flimsiness" that I mentioned is the secret. When you begin to play, instead of feeling that standard back-pressure, it "flexes", so you feel more flow than with other practice mutes. Also, for some reason you can feel more of a vibration in your hands. That I can't explain, but like that I'm not so isolated from the horn in a tactile sense.
If you're shopping for a practice mute and want a decent one for a decent price, check out the Pampet. [I am not affiliated with Pampet mutes in any way.] _________________ Schilke B1, Bach 37, 1969 Getzen Severinsen Eterna

I had the same experience -> Silent Brass to Pampet. As soon as I put the Pampet in, I just went "Wow!"
Stanton, was there a significant difference in volume between your Silent Brass and the Best Brass mutes? Thanks.
p.s. My first year at North Texas, my roommate was from Skokie. Small world. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

It is my favorite for exactly the reasons you mention. Because it's flimsy and the end cap is fastened loosely, it develops a different sound (a bit buzzy) just like a real horn when played strongly, unlike other practice mutes. The Harmon wah-wah with a drilled cork stuffed in it is my other choice, for the same reasons--developing sound and lack of isolation from the horn. |

Yes, big believer here! I've even sent a number of them to my trumpet playing friends! I believe the initial recommendation came from you Stanton! _________________ MH |

I, also, am very pleased with this "silencer". My dog, neighbors and wife as well! |
