I stopped playing maybe 30 years ago but never stopped practicing a little each month. Turning 66 I have decided to re commit to my trumpet. I even picked up a good deal on a demo i32 schilke to go with my old LA Benge.
Middle and low register tone is good, upper is weak and endurance is low. That said I will be practicing and playing everyday. I also joined a community band to aid in my playing. Looking forward to this new adventurw _________________ Schilke X3b Bb Trumpet

Endurance will improve with practice but upper register will be a problem without the correct technique. You're never too old to work with a teacher. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

Welcome (back)!
Similar situation, I took off ten years when my children were born.
My suggestion is to immerse in as many playing opportunities as possible, such as church, brass bands, and swing/big bands.
And as Hermokiwi noted, it is never too late to get a teacher. Just be aware that (based on my own personal experience), most music Ed majors don’t necessarily have a true understanding of embouchure.
A modern “chop doc” such as Laurie Frink or Pops will offer insights to physical techniques needed to open up the upper register to you more readily than regular teachers. Again, in my experience.
Adams, Caruso, Gordon, or Reinhardt proponents might be a good place to start ... Just make sure you are enjoying the journey! _________________ do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God |

Thanks for the encouragement and advice. I am not too worried about my range. It will comeback with playing. I am as suggested joining a community band and looking into playing at church. I have many friends that still perform and when my chops are ready they all have invited me to play with their bands. _________________ Schilke X3b Bb Trumpet

I also took several years off and now playing every day. The most helpful thing I did was Earl Irons method book. I still do several exercises out of that book as a daily routine. Good luck to you. |
