According to the serial number on my old trumpet, it was actually made in 1949 instead of 1948, which I assumed the "48" on the bell underneath holton meant...

Hi Annie,
Most instrument makers only used serial numbers to date their instruments and the 48 on your bell may be the model number. Holton did use model numbers for many years.
Happy holidays!,

I just purchased ( and, sadly, had to return, a Holton 48 which was also made in 1947. Not a bad horn. The 48 is the model number, an intermediate or low level pro horn I believe, but not positive. kpb

Well, this horn is obviously a student horn and it's seen many years...according to my dad it has been dragged down the stairs after it got attached to a dog's tail...somehow...it was repaired, of course, but it's not nearly as good as my Bach Strad 37.

Holton used numbers as model designations, 45,48, & 51, were the "Revelation" line.. these were not considered student horns that was the Collegiate line, these revelation trumpets were described as "moderately priced professional" horns......Holtons most expensive horns at the time were the 47 Symphony and 49 Stratodyne. I had a 47 that I sold, it was a very nice trumpet but there is something about the blow of a Holton that always feels strange to me. Gimmie a vintage Olds or Conn.
