Hey all,
my teacher has a maynard furguson (holton) he wants to sell. I have no clue what he wants for it, considering it's in good condition with no problems, what do you think it's worth?

Thanks!

Bonnie

I read somewhere (may have been on Ole's site) that a principal trumpet player in a fairly prestigious symphony orchestra (can't remember which) uses a Holton MF model as his main Bb trumpet. It just serves to prove that old preconceived barriers that were in place regarding which horns are appropriate to orchestras are gradually disappearing. This despite some sections being "obligated" to play Bach. Anyway, does someone know which player and which symphony I am referring to?

I have no idea of what the model # is, but I think it's lacquer.

The principal trumpet of Kansas City uses a Holton trumpet.

Thank you, fatsound. I bet he gets a fat sound with it, too.

Here is a link to an ITG article if you are interested.

It's Gary Schultza - apparently he also uses a Holton C custom - .468. He's playing these with a Bach 1/24bb/18 throat - wow!

Hey Bonnie,

Before you buy your teachers used horn, I have a brand new MF lacquer horn on e-bay, less than a month old with a reserve price of $850.00. I like the new T05S I just got better.

I had a ST307 in Silver about 7 years ago that got stolen. After that loss I decided to get a Strad 43 and have had it ever since. I noticed a great difference in these horns. The MF Horn was great on the Marching field and in Jazz Band. Man, could that baby scream. It did take more air than my strad due to the bore size. I also used it in concert band with great success. I just now ordered a ST302 on ebay and waiting for it to come in. I'm not sure why I bought it. Might it be because I think its a great horn, I'm sentimental about that long lost 307, or cause I'm a Manard Fan?? Probably all of the above. In conclusion, I think that the Holton MF Horn is a great player and, depending on condition and price, you'll me more than happy with this horn. Just like me!!

MP,
Was that this one?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2368840841&category=16214&rd=1

I was watching this auction and almost bid. If it was this horn, let us know how it plays so that I can be more jealous. Hope it plays great!
Thanks!

Yup, thats the one. Sorry but I just had to snipe that auction. It was just too attractive to me. I'll post what I think of it when I get it in. Better luck next time.

I just bought one of the MF ST304s from a buddy of mine. It is the first trumpet that I have ever liked enough to want to buy that is not a Benge. Whoever you are who posted the original message, as a professional studio and road trumpet player I highly recomend taking it if it is still available.

Don't know how long this thread has been buried, but at http://www.giamusic.com/doit/artistmodels.html , you can check out Gary Schutza playing the ST307 on one of the sound clips if you scroll down. It might take it a bit to load for some reason, but he sure gets an excellent classical sound from that trumpet. Now who ever said you needed a Bach to get into an orchestra? j/k

I play a ST-550 S, which is in my opinion the best of the 26 or so trumpets and cornets I have acquired in the past year. This is absolutely the best student line horn for me, very well constructed, great valves, and slots dead on. It is a .459 bore, not the .468 of the St-300 series ( the ones Maynard plays), but is still a very open blow. With a Shilke 15c4c mpc., the 'classic' sound for chamber or orchestra is easily attainable, although I don't perform or play with any other players, so I can't comment on blending. With a Stork screamer, the tone gets just as edgey as you want, although with my limited range I can't do justice to the upper register aspects of the trumpet.

If you are looking for a classic sound for orchestra, you might want to test drive one of the Holton T-100 series, as these are targeted for that type of play
