Well, it's time to wrap up this little project. I thought about how best to bring it to a close, and decided to go out the way I started - with a beautiful Collins Performing Etude. Phil posted a couple of samples on Facebook in March of 2020, which is what started all of this. As you know, he has provided a great deal of the material for this series. I am grateful for these gifts, as well as his friendship and support. Phil has been a huge source of inspiration to me since my undergrad years in Cincinnati. If you haven't ordered your own copies of his Performing Etudes, do so. You won't be disappointed.
A special thanks to fellow comrades-in-etudes, Chris Smith and Jack Burt. I think we really pushed each other to be better, to stay the course. It has been great getting to know both of you through our mutual suffering and machinations.
Thanks to all of you that have indulged me along the way. Your kind words and encouragement kept me on track when it would have been very easy to just quit. This was truly a grind. I'm glad I did it, but I have no desire to repeat it. The LA Phil has started on a path towards "normalcy", and this project fulfilled its intended purpose: I feel ready, physically and mentally, to return to playing for live audiences. My first opportunity is this Saturday!
Finally, I would be remiss without acknowledging my family, who not only put up with the daily etudes (they had to listen to all of the takes that didn't make the videos, too), but also helped by allowing me to feature them in the intros. You guys are the best.
Take care, everyone. | |

Your videos have been truly inspirational - not only the playing of exceptional beauty but your determination to keep it up for the long haul. Thank you
Best wishes to you for your return to live performances with the LA Phil _________________ "It's simple, it just isn't easy" - VC |

Very nice performance Jim. I'm an amateur, just joined TH, I'm so happy I found something great so quickly. I have to improve every aspect of my playing, but I'm the most jealous of your intonation.
I wish I had a teacher like Jim. Which part of the TH forums have ads for teachers? Is there such thing as a dedicated forum or I have to look at profiles?
Anyways, Thanks! |

Well, you're an orchestra player, so good intonation is basically a given. You have it, but if you didn't have it, you wouldn't be playing in a orchestra professionally! I feel like that compliment has been done to death.
Anybody with bad intonation will never make it to a professional orchestra, so of COURSE you have great intonation. lol
You also have a very nice dark timbred tone. That's not what I usually like to listen to (I'm more of a bright timbred commercial tone kind of guy), but this was as mellow as mellow can be. Loved the tone, even if it's not what I usually like.
But the REAL compliment is the smoothness and consistency between your notes. Your consistency is BUTTERY SMOOTH and you apparently don't miss notes very often. They all come out smooth and mellow as can be. It's gorgeous for some easy-listening.
From the safety of your practice room, you're cranking out some good music, Sir. _________________ As a composer, I will never write "B Sharp", "C Flat", "E Sharp", or "F Flat". I don't care what the key signature is. I'm not an academic; I'm a musician.
