Haha. If I could find a way to monetize this...
I'll start with one, and if that doesn't work, I'll go to the other. I think I can get a more even vibrato with the hand, but if I'm using too much pressure, it becomes too shallow to be meaningful. That is actually happening on these etudes more than I'd like, namely because all of them, even the short ones, require more constant time on the face than probably at least 90% of what I do at work (probably more). These require a very different skill set than my day job. _________________ Jim Wilt

Episode #108
https://youtu.be/hdytU4CoHRA
Blazhevich often means long, sustained playing with low, soft passages sprinkled in at the most inopportune moments (at least for me). This is a good example. Not my best effort, but it's what I had on that day. I view these as kind of a time-capsule of my Covid experience, so... _________________ Jim Wilt

I like the way you transition the different elements of this this one from the snappy to the more lyrical slurred triplets. Keeps it interesting and musical. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Episode #109
https://youtu.be/G02DTxtxC0I
One of my goals, besides just getting through this without getting tied up (I'm reading off of very small copy) was to try to maintain a triplet feel on the triplets, instead of lapsing into a two-32nd note-16th note rhythm throughout, which is how I played it as a teenager many, many years ago. My first take was very disciplined, but came off sounding very pedantic and stale, so I bumped the tempo up a little bit and hoped for the best. There are some lapses, but intentionally stretching that rhythm can and does lead to a slowing of the tempo if you're not really conscientious to avoid that trap. _________________ Jim Wilt

Just sat back and enjoyed this one. Thanks. Very deceptive etude. Seems so simple, but .... _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Came across this performance on FaceBook and immediately thought of you, Jim, and your practising in that small studio. I've attempted to tag a FaceBook share for you, but then thought of posting the link here.
If the recording is done in the stairwell ... BTW it's not trumpet but acapella male voices https://www.facebook.com/JonathanRoumieOfficial/videos/595033917802390/ _________________ Eliot

Episode #110
https://youtu.be/d_uTKeWX35U
Someone asked for an etude on a smaller horn, so I thought I'd try this one on my Eb. Andrew Row sent me an etude that he had written, and I thought it lent itself well to that horn. Biggest challenge for me was to keep it even - my fingers tend to clump up on the runs. As uneven as this is, it's way better than the first couple of tries. I do remember being a little beat up that day - was going through a rough patch - and there are a couple of notes that quack on me as a result. _________________ Jim Wilt

Both accomplished. As I listened I was thinking "happy fingers." You have frequently mentioned slow fingers. Nowhere in evidence here. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Hi. Played your Arban #5 this morning for one of my students, then we tackled it. He asked me why I don't play it as fast as you. I said it was because it was 9:00 on a Sunday morning. Well, somebody has to take the low road! jw |

Coordinating fingers and tongue - the biggest challenge for me and the area I come up a little short on this one. Endurance played a smaller factor, as did air management, but yeah, fingers again. _________________ Jim Wilt

Nice to hear you play the Eb! That is a Schilke E3L, right? What is the bell? Did you get a different bell from the standard? _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Schilke E3L with a cut down Mt. Vernon Bach 239 bell. Frankenhorn. I have a 239 bell for the D side as well - really neat sounding mod, more body, more orchestral. _________________ Jim Wilt

really? I thought it might be a Besson or Benge or some European brand I'm not familiar with. Jerry's best horn. He left his mark, that's for sure. jw |

Very interesting etude. You've been working triplets a good bit and then here you have this thing that teases you with triplets and then throws straight eighths that want to feel like triplets at you. Kind of a test of wills. You handled that quite well. I like the way you played around with that tension in the etude. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S
