|
|
Hello. I have been getting back into baroque playing on the piccolo (flute and oboe pieces, some violin etc) and am looking for a good text on style and ornamentation to read. I have several standard pic books (Hickmann and Webster) which have a bit written but I am looking for more detail, particularly as it might pertain to non-trumpet instruments. Any suggestions?
Thanks. |

Get Baroque Music: Style and Performance: A Handbook by Donington. I used to be a baroque specialist and that was the book all my teachers recommended. I seem to have two copies (don't know how that happened) so PM me if you want one of mine for cheap. _________________ Thane Standard Large Bb / Monette Unity B6-7M mpc

The most respectable Baroque Performance practice manuals are the primary source by Quantz On Playing the Flute - he is probably the most quoted, and the secondary source that does a really good compilation of most of them is Mary Cyr Performing Baroque Music
If you want to look into trumpet specific, Anna Freeman and Ed Tarr have a few books out for natural trumpet. Trumpeters often quote Altenberg, but his ornamentations are not representative of all of Baroque.
Here's a little bit more comprehensive list that I did a while back (make sure to turn on the outline on the left side for easier navigation):

Edit: the Donington source that's quoted above is also a great source |

Good point about Quantz. We were advised to start with Donington and then move on to Quantz. It is a bit hard reading Quantz at first but with patience you are rewarded. The Cyr book was not yet out when I was doing this.. quite awhile back! _________________ Thane Standard Large Bb / Monette Unity B6-7M mpc
