You know, I was blowing warm air into my trumpet yesterday, before putting a mute in, and it hit me. Why am I doing this? I've been doing this since the 50s by rote and never questioned it.
Why? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

The moisture from the warm air gives more grip to the cork making it stay in the bell more securely. _________________ Van Laar B6

Condensation helps mute corks grip the bell.
I only fog the bell when using the Jo Ral bubble mute, as that's the one that has the greatest tendency to fall out (for me, at least).
Other mutes get a dusting of violin rosin on the corks. _________________ -Tom Hall-

But, once the cork returns to it's original shape, wouldn't the mute fall out of the horn? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

What?
Yes, the condensation helps keeps the mute in.
Jo-Ral Bubble is definitley one of the common culprits. I've replaced the cork with self stick sheet foam-cut to fit.. works much better. I've had little issue since doing this.
The other DIY fix, is to cut an old bicycle tire tube into a short segment and stretch it, inside out, over the cork. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

Often done for bubble mutes, since most of them have a tendency to fall out.
Unless you use a bubble mute without cork, like the Soulo Mute bubble version.
Never had an issue with that one falling out _________________ Trumpet : Yamaha YTR-9335CHS + Yamaha YTR-6335H
