I have just received a Bach 5B mouthpiece and it is completely different from the 5B that I purchased in 2010. The edge in particular is less sharp, less sharp. The depth seems the same, but the eternal is slightly different. Easier to get to the high notes. Much more balanced sound. |

Is it an older model Bach of some era? Examples: 'Bach Corp', 'Bach Corp.'
or of roughly the same new year? _________________ Bach 1B

Hm, that is a little strange. Maybe Bach recently changed that size up a little like they're notoriously known for? I could only see this as the case if the recently received is newer than 2010 though _________________ Bach 1B

Bach mouthpieces are still inconsistent. Maybe better than the Corp. days, but they are still inconsistent.
I have several 3C's all made within the past 3 years. They are all different.
Yes they are cut on a CNC lathe now, but then they are buffed many times by several different people before and after plating. I toured the factory and watched them do it. This is what causes the variation.
Also, they change manufacturing procedures every once in a while. Your other piece is from 10 years ago, and things at the factory may be slightly different now. _________________ Justin Dickson

I think Bach new mouthpieces are far more consistent,(not perfect) but yes, in the past consistency was a big issue and changes in design have happened far too often.
The other thing to consider is from where you buy the piece and how long they've had it in stock. My local store, where I used to work, has a stock of Bach, and other brands, that have been sitting on the shelf for years, maybe even more than a decade. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

I also agree that the current generation of Bach mouthpieces are more consistent. FWIW, my Bach 6C I purchased a year ago feels just like the one I purchased 10 years ago, and also feels like a beat-up I still have from 30 years ago.
That being said, for the OP, it may be that his older 5B was the "inconsistent" one. It also could be that the older 5B has micro scratches and other signs of wear that make the new 5B feel different, even though it isn't.
But in the end, it sounds like the OP is happy with his new 5B. That's the bottom line.

Anybody looking for a 5B with a softer rim should try a Yamaha 14d4. The 5B I used to play on had a nasty rim. |

I tried the Yamaha 14d4, but the sound is incomparable to the 5B |

Maybe the punishing rim results in a better sound? The Yamaha is pretty mellow, too much so maybe. |
