As someone new to TCE, how does one aproach the problem of playing sustained notes with TCE? How does the spit-buzz translate into notes on the trumpet?
Thanks in advance for any replies. _________________ Sima, Kanstul 1525 Flugel and Kanstul pocket trumpet. Olds Super |

Think of playing as the controlled release of pressurised air. It the is tongue that controls the release of air.
In the Trumpet Secrets book Jerome wrote "think of blowing all of the air to the tip of the tongue as you play" (or words to that effect).
It is the job of the embouchure (which includes the tongue) to provide resistance to the air stream. The result of pushing air against the resistance of the embouchure is compression. _________________ UK-based professional trumpeter.

Perhaps the position and muscle tension of the tongue should be maintained for the entire duration of the note: don't relax the tongue (or anything else) prematurely.
The tongue action contributes to (controls?} the formation of the embouchure - and the tongue is needed to keep that embouchure active.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

Be conscious of guessing. This system isn’t a mystery, you just have to ask someone who knows.
Personally I wouldn’t talk about tension in the tongue as it’s not really a helpful idea. Just keep it anchored to the bottom lip. _________________ UK-based professional trumpeter.
